The Chief Information Officer Division is an exciting, fast-paced team that drives the digital agenda for the Department of Industry, Science and Resources. The group leads the department’s digital agenda by partnering with our stakeholders to co-design digital experiences, making it simpler to innovate, collaborate and communicate, and continue to evolve digital services using leading edge technology and smart design.
The Cyber Security Team is responsible for oversight and management of cyber security within the department. The team is made up of four functions including: Governance, Risk and Compliance, Security Operations Centre, Project Advisory and Assurance and Cyber Engagement.

APS6 Senior Cyber Security Specialist
As part of the Cyber Security Engagement function, you will contribute to a range of cyber security advisory, governance, assurance, stakeholder engagement, and capability uplift activities. These responsibilities are shared across the team, and the specific duties undertaken at any point in time will depend on operational priorities, workload, team capability, and business requirements.
Responsibilities may include:

Provide cyber security advice, guidance, and assurance to business areas, project teams, and senior stakeholders to support secure and risk-informed decision making.

Act as a cyber security subject matter expert, resolving complex enquiries and supporting the development and mentoring of team members.
-
Develop, review, and maintain cyber security policies, standards, guidance material, and awareness initiatives to support departmental and government requirements.
-
Deliver customer-focused cyber security services by managing enquiries, resolving or escalating issues, maintaining stakeholder relationships, and communicating effectively with technical and non-technical audiences.

Identify opportunities to improve cyber security processes, analyse workflows, recommend enhancements, and support the implementation of improved ways of working.
-
Use ServiceNow and related platforms to manage requests, track activities and workflows, support reporting, and improve the efficient delivery of cyber security services.

Contribute to cyber security strategy delivery, security uplift initiatives, awareness campaigns, and workforce capability development activities.

Prepare reports, briefings, presentations, and other artefacts to communicate cyber security risks, initiatives, outcomes, and recommendations to stakeholders and executives.

Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to support the delivery of cyber security objectives and continuous improvement initiatives.

Maintain awareness of emerging cyber threats, government policies, security frameworks, and industry best practice to continuously improve departmental cyber resilience.
APS5 Cyber Security Operations Centre Analyst
As part of the Cyber Security Operations function, you will contribute to a range of security monitoring, incident response, threat management, and vulnerability management activities. These responsibilities are shared across the team, and the specific duties undertaken at any point in time will depend on operational priorities, workload, team capability, and business requirements.
Responsibilities may include:
- Monitor the department's SIEM, SOAR, and vulnerability management platforms to detect, analyse, and respond to security threats, suspicious activity, and emerging vulnerabilities.

Investigate security incidents and vulnerabilities using security logs, threat intelligence, and other data sources to determine impact, root cause, and remediation requirements.

Perform incident response activities, including triage, containment, remediation, and post-incident improvement actions.
-
Administer and maintain vulnerability scanning tools (e.g. Tenable and Microsoft Defender), including scan validation, platform health checks, and onboarding support for project teams.
-
Support vulnerability prioritisation, remediation tracking, and reporting through ServiceNow and other governance processes, including contributions to the Vulnerability Management Board.

Develop and implement security controls, procedures, and recommendations to reduce cyber risk and prevent future incidents.
-
Deliver reporting and briefings on security incidents, vulnerabilities, and threat trends to technical and non-technical stakeholders, including executives.
-
Collaborate with intelligence, operational, and project teams to develop threat assessments, remediation strategies, and risk-informed security outcomes.
-
Maintain accurate security and asset information, including departmental system registers, system ownership records, and technology version data.
-
Stay informed of emerging cyber security threats, vulnerabilities, government guidance, and industry best practice to continuously improve departmental cyber resilience.
To be eligible for employment in the APS and the department, candidates must be Australian Citizens.
Positions require a Baseline security clearance and successful candidates will be required to obtain and maintain a clearance at this level.
A merit pool may be established and used to fill future vacancies within 18 months from the date the vacancy was first advertised in the Gazette.
