Your Role
An exciting role exists to join the team at Catholic Education Office in the position of Assistant Payroll Coordinator, for immediate commencement. This is a full time continuing position, based in Rockhampton.
The role presents a rewarding opportunity to contribute to end-to-end payroll processing and reporting, ensuring accuracy and compliance across fortnightly, monthly, and annual payroll functions in a supportive and professional environment. This role involves partnering closely with the Payroll Coordinator to manage fortnightly payroll cycles, maintain system integrity, and provide expert guidance on employment conditions, remuneration and legislative requirements.
The position requires a detail-oriented and systems-focused professional with a strong understanding of payroll compliance, awards and industrial agreements, along with the ability to continuously improve processes, maintain data integrity and support evolving organisation needs.
The successful applicant will be a proactive and collaborative team member who ensures seamless payroll delivery, contributes to staff capability through training and support, and builds strong stakeholder relationships by providing accurate, clear and professional guidance.
Typical duties include, but are not limited:
- Under the direction of the Payroll Coordinator and in their absence, coordinate the successful completion of end-to-end payroll processing and reporting on a fortnightly basis, including but not limited to the preparation of wages for all staff, processing of bank transactions, management and remittance of STP fortnightly reporting, superannuation reporting and PAYG tax requirements.
- Under the direction of the Payroll Coordinator and in their absence, complete end of financial year and end of month payroll processes.
- Assist in the development and management of systems to enhance and support the processing, receipt and acknowledgement of employment related documentation from kindergartens, schools, colleges and outside school hours care services while ensuring that all documents are in line with Awards, Industrial Agreements, NES and other statutory requirements.
- Provide accurate and concise advice to the Diocesan Director, CEO Leadership Team, School Principals and staff on matters relating to awards, agreements, legislative requirements and all other aspects of employment including remuneration, conditions of employment and leave entitlements.
- Ensure the accurate set up and completion of new employee payroll files for successful payment in the fortnightly pay cycle.
- In consultation with the Payroll Coordinator, manage the Chris21 database and system configuration to ensure accurate updates to the Chris21 database, to meet all legislative award and agreement changes.

About you
The successful applicant will have:
- An understanding of, and a commitment to, the ethos of Catholic Education.
- Ability to work within a confidential environment
- High level competency in end-to-end payroll processing, compliance and systems management
- Industry experience in conducting complex payroll processes
- Sound knowledge of Chris21 or similar payroll system
- Demonstrated knowledge of Modern Awards, Industrial Agreements, and the National Employment Standards
- Proficiency in all MS Office Programs
- The ability to multi-task and work to task deadlines in a fast-paced environment
- Effective relationship building and influencing skills
- Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills, both written and oral
- The ability to work well either individually or collaboratively as part of a team, and to accept direction and support.
- The ability to adapt and be flexible within a dynamic educational setting.
- Degree level qualifications in a relevant field and/or minimum of 5 years demonstrated equivalent industry or specialised professional experience in a relevant role.
