Position Descriptor:
The Whyalla Special Education Centre is a school for students from R-Y12. Students at the Whyalla Special Education Centre have a range of disabilities that impact on their learning; physical disabilities, intellectual disabilities, autism etc. Some students have complex communication needs and are non-verbal. The successful applicant will be expected to use a range of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems so knowledge of and experience in using AAC; particularly PODD communication books and Proloquo2Go are essential.
Teaching and learning is planned using ABLES and the Australian Curriculum for students in year R-12. Older students undertake modified SACE programs. All students have One Plans incorporating individualised goals. The school uses ABLES SA to assess the students and support their individual learning plans. Knowledge of this would be desirable.
Experience in differentiating the curriculum for students with disabilities is essential. The teacher will be required to lead their class team of SSO's, therefore their ability to operate collaboratively within a team is essential. The Whyalla Special Education Centre has a whole school balanced literacy program using the Four Blocks in Literacy and Sequential Phonics. Knowledge of and experience in teaching a balanced literacy program is highly desirable. Demonstrated experience in using a range of strategies to support students to develop appropriate behaviours in the classroom & community is essential. All teachers are involved in a site Professional Learning Community whose business is to set achievement goals, create then implement the plan to realise those goals, and at least one other committee.
