Primary objective
Provide Geographic Information System (GIS) services, cartographic mapping, and spatial data management and analysis services
to support the development, quality assurance, and publication of environmental spatial data products for internal and external
clients. The role contributes to spatial data quality assurance, including metadata management, prepares cartographic products,
and collaborates across the Department to support natural resource assessment and evidence-based decision-making.
Context statement
Geospatial Services supports natural resource management programs through the provision of spatial data validation, GIS and ETL
(Extract, Transform, Load) services, cartographic products, and the maintenance and enhancement of the Department’s spatial data
products and web mapping applications. This includes the support, maintenance and enhancement of the Department’s spatial data
platforms, including the Oracle Spatial environmental database, ArcGIS Server, ArcGIS Online, ArcGIS Enterprise, FME Server, and
the NR Maps web mapping applications.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Support the preparation, publication, and delivery of data products using the departments spatial and mapping applications.
2. Deliver GIS, mapping, and spatial analysis services to produce spatial information and cartographic products that meet
departmental standards, including metadata management and spatial data quality assurance requirements.
3. Contribute to improving workflows, ETL processes and GIS tools that support efficient data management and map production.
4. Liaise with data custodians and end users to deliver value-added natural resource spatial information, services, and products.
5. Provide support to build departmental capability in GIS processes, spatial data management, and spatial platforms and tools.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Tertiary qualification in GIS, spatial science, natural resource management, or a related discipline, or substantial relevant
experience in a closely related technical field.
2. Demonstrated experience delivering GIS services using a range of spatial datasets, tools and techniques, including ESRI desktop
and enterprise GIS environments.
3. Demonstrated experience in spatial data management, including working with spatial data formats, maintaining metadata, and
implementing spatial data quality assurance and validation processes.
4. Demonstrated ability to produce high-quality cartographic and web-based mapping products that effectively communicate
spatial information to a range of audiences using GIS tools (e.g. ArcGIS Pro, QGIS, ArcGIS Online etc).
5. Demonstrated experience contributing to spatial data workflows, including ETL processes (e.g. FME), automation, and/or
supporting enterprise spatial systems such as ArcGIS Server/Enterprise or spatial databases.
6. Well-developed communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to explain technical GIS concepts, liaise with data
custodians and end users, and work effectively within multidisciplinary teams.
7. Proven ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines, and work both independently and collaboratively, with a high
level of attention to detail and the ability to review and quality assure spatial data and mapping products.
Desirable
1. Knowledge of the Northern Territory’s natural resources environment.
2. Ability to support and provide advice to staff to develop their capacity in the use and management of GIS datasets.
