Open Arms – Veterans & Families Counselling (formerly VVCS) is Australia’s leading provider of high-quality mental health assessment and clinical counselling services for Australian veterans and their families. Open Arms are focused on meeting client needs through a combination of proven clinical practices and new and emerging evidence-based approaches.
Under the direction of the Regional Director the position requires to leverage off procedures, evidence based practices, knowledge and experience gained from their own Lived Experience journey to lead and support the Lived Experience Peers within the region. They will also utilise their experience as a current or ex-serving Australian Defence Force member, or veteran’s family member to inform best practice. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are paramount, and the Assistant Director must demonstrate high levels of integrity and emotional intelligence.
The Assistant Director will have oversight of the regional Lived Experience Peer team from an operational perspective to provide advice, support, auditing and reporting metrics to assess performance, service impacts and effectively implement quality improvement processes aligning with the Open Arms Model of Care, standards, procedures and frameworks. Under the Model of Care the Assistant Director will also manage complex client and stakeholder relationships including expectation management and resolve conflict of escalated or sensitive issues.
DUTIES
As an EL 1 Assistant Director – Lived Experience you will be required to
- Lead and manage a Lived Experience team within a region inclusive of operational supervision and performance management of employees to ensure their ability to meet service delivery requirements

Articulate Open Arms Model of Care, vision, procedures, frameworks, strategic and operational goals to staff and translate into practice

Whilst working in a multidisciplinary team review complex and sensitive issues relating to clients, escalated priorities and organisational outcomes

Build the capacity of staff to undertake their roles efficiently and professionally to meet expected standards of service and quality. Identify and contribute to continuous business improvement and lead change in a constructive and collaborative manner

Prepare complex and sensitive correspondence, reports, case notes and documentation, utilising relevant legislative and process requirements

Monitor and drive the implementation of quality assurance relating to client engagement and satisfaction, auditing, and business support and practices

Utilise understanding of the wider Lived Experience movement and concepts including Lived Experience-led research and training to promote contemporary, recovery-oriented, person-directed service delivery

Ability, readiness and dedication to intentionally, safely and effectively utilise lived experience to mentor and support others in the delivery of services across a range of settings

Embed Lived Experience values and concepts into policy and programs by actively contributing in the co-design of Open Arms projects, policies, procedures, and research initiatives

Build stakeholder relationships based upon shared Lived Experience and support the Regional Director to maintain strategic alliances with other business areas of DVA, the Australian Defence Force, Ex-Service organisations, government agencies, and other service providers

Ensure all Lived Experience work undertaken in the region is conducted in accordance with the governance requirements of Open Arms.

Any successful candidate external to DVA offered employment will be required to undergo a pre-engagement screening check, even if they have a security clearance. The screening check is conducted in accordance with the Australian Government Protective Security Policy Framework requirements.

Any successful candidate will also be required to obtain and/or maintain, a baseline Vetting (AGSVA) security clearance as a minimum.
Mandatory Requirement
- Currently hold or ability to obtain a Working with Vulnerable People registration/Working with Children check

Currently hold or the ability to obtain and maintain a full unrestricted and valid Australian Driver's Licence

Personal experience of mental health recovery and periods of healing, and experience in accessing mental health services OR
-
Experience of supporting someone in mental health recovery and periods of healing, and experience in accessing mental health services AND
-
Experience working in Lived Experience and/or Peer support service delivery roles AND
-
A current or ex-serving Australian Defence Force member, or veteran’s family member.
