Nepean Hospital is an important referral and teaching hospital of the University of Sydney. It serves the local areas of Penrith, Hawkesbury and the Blue Mountains (comprising a population of 300,000 and growing) and accepts patients from as far as Lithgow and Bathurst flown in by helicopter retrieval services. Nepean Hospital is the Regional Trauma Centre for these areas. ICU positions are accredited with the CICM (ANZ), RACP, ANZCA, and ACEM for Intensive Care Training. Fellows are encouraged to prepare for appropriate exams.
The role of the Intensive Care Unit is to provide Intensive Care services to the community as well as providing emergency response to all wards within the hospital.
What you'll be doing
- Make a timely, structured and accurate assessment of a comprehensive range of life-threatening problems in a critically ill patient and apply life supporting therapy.
- Help facilitate the running of the ARTIC service (Admission Review Team), which include the MET and outreach service.
- Lead regular multidisciplinary training (including simulation / Immersive team training sessions).
- Work within a multidisciplinary team to deliver education, quality assurance and improvement initiatives and act as a role model.
- Take a leadership role within a busy ICU, overseeing change management.
- Teach other clinical staff, to ensure an optimal learning environment, promote growth and development of others, and to develop skills in teaching.
- Participate in a 24/7 roster and may be rostered to day, evening or night shifts across a seven day roster.
Where you'll be working
- 24 bed unit (funded for 21 beds).
- Workforce includes: 10 Staff Specialists, 1 Echo Fellow, 1 Professorial fellow (involved in research / education / other), 1 ARTIC fellow (helps manage and educate outreach / MET service), 1 Provisional Fellows (typically undertaking fellowship exams), 11 trainee registrars, 4 Senior Medical Resident Officers and 4 Residents.
