SkillQuest Solutions are seeking a qualified and experienced Chef on behalf of our client, a vibrant Mexican restaurant located in Hyde Park, South Australia.
This restaurant offers an immersive street-style Mexican dining experience, combining bold flavours, authentic ingredients and contemporary presentation. The restaurant serves a diverse menu of Mexican favourites and seasonal specialties in a lively casual-dining environment. It also provides tailored dining and catering experiences for private functions and special events.

Salary - $79,000 - $89,000 plus superannuation per annum

THE ROLE:
The successful applicant will be responsible for planning and preparing high-quality Mexican dishes, maintaining consistent food and presentation standards, supporting menu development and coordinating kitchen operations during busy service periods and special events.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:
· Plan, develop and cost authentic and contemporary Mexican menus for regular dining services, seasonal promotions and special events.
· Prepare, cook and present a wide range of high-quality Mexican dishes in accordance with established recipes and restaurant standards.
· Adapt traditional Mexican recipes and cooking methods to complement contemporary Australian dining preferences.
· Experiment with flavours, ingredients and seasonal produce to develop new dishes and enhance existing menu offerings.
· Monitor food quality throughout the preparation, cooking and presentation stages to ensure consistency in flavour, appearance, texture and portion size.
· Estimate food requirements and ensure ingredients and supplies are ordered, received and stored in accordance with kitchen requirements.
· Monitor stock and inventory levels, maintain effective stock rotation and implement procedures to minimize food wastage.
· Maintain appropriate portion control and assist with managing food and labour costs.
· Plan kitchen rosters and allocate duties to support efficient operations and appropriate staffing levels.
· Oversee kitchen workflow and delegate food preparation and cooking tasks during busy service periods.
· Supervise, train and mentor junior chefs and kitchen support staff.
· Demonstrate Mexican cooking techniques, food preparation methods and presentation standards to kitchen employees.
· Provide constructive feedback and leadership to maintain a productive, motivated and collaborative kitchen team.
· Liaise with management and front-of-house staff regarding menu items, preparation methods, service requirements and customer feedback.
· Collaborate with event coordinators and management to deliver tailored menus and catering services for private functions and special events.
· Ensure compliance with Australian food safety, workplace hygiene and occupational health and safety requirements.
· Maintain a clean, organized and hygienic kitchen environment at all times.
WHAT WE ARE LOOKING FOR:
- Relevant qualification, such as a Diploma of Hospitality Management - Commercial Cookery (or agreed equivalent).
- A minimum of 1 year (preferably more) professional experience as a Chef within a commercial kitchen, restaurant or hospitality environment, ideally in Mexican cuisine.
- Strong knowledge of traditional Mexican ingredients, flavours, recipes and food preparation techniques.
- Proven ability to design, cost and deliver authentic Mexican menus to a consistently high standard.
- Experience preparing both traditional and contemporary Mexican dishes in a bust restaurant environment.
- Demonstrated experience supervising, training and mentoring junior chefs and kitchen support staff.
- Sound knowledge of food costing, portion control, inventory management and kitchen operations.
- Ability to maintain high standards of food quality and presentation while working under pressure.
- Thorough understanding of Australian food safety, hygiene and safe food-handling requirements.
- Strong organisational, communication and time-management skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with management, kitchen employees and front-of-house staff.
- Availability to work flexible hours, including evenings, weekends, public holidays and peak service periods.
- You must have unrestricted working rights to work full time in Australia to be eligible for consideration.
