SHEPHERD is looking for a commercially driven General Manager – Client Engagement to turn strong relationships, technical credibility and a proven delivery reputation into our next phase of growth.
This is an opportunity for a leader who knows how to build trusted client relationships, identify opportunities and turn them into quality, sustainable revenue. You’ll continue to enhance what has already made Shepherd a success, whilst having the autonomy to help shape our next growth chapter, including building the processes, systems, discipline and team that will support our future growth.
This Opportunity
This isn’t a role where you simply manage from the sidelines. Initially, you’ll be a player and coach. Personally leading priority accounts, developing new client relationships, managing opportunities and converting a strong pipeline, while simultaneously building the Client Engagement function, team and commercial framework.
You’ll bring structure and accountability to how SHEPHERD approaches growth, including:
- Developing and executing priority client and account strategies.
- Building and managing a visible, qualified sales pipeline.
- Identifying and converting new client opportunities, extensions, renewals and expanded engagements.
- Leading opportunity qualification and bid/no-bid decisions.
- Strengthening SHEPHERD’s commercial processes, systems and reporting.
- Building trusted relationships with key clients and decision-makers.
- Developing and leading the Client Engagement team as the function grows.
- Working closely with operational General Managers to ensure commercial opportunities align with delivery capability and client expectations.
- Contributing to SHEPHERD’s growth strategy, budget and commercial performance.
What you’ll bring
You’ll be an experienced commercial, business development, sales or client engagement leader with a proven ability to generate growth through relationships, strategy and execution.
You’ll bring:
- Proven commercial leadership in long-cycle B2B, professional services, infrastructure, government, local government, engineering, civil, asset management, technology-enabled services or a related field
- Demonstrated experience carrying a personal pipeline while coaching or leading others
- Strong account strategy, relationship development and opportunity-conversion capability
- Strong discovery capability: able to understand business problems, stakeholder drivers, decision pathways, urgency and value
- Commercial judgement across revenue, margin, risk, pricing, delivery fit and bid/no-bid decisions
- Ability to lead disciplined pipeline cadence, CRM hygiene and forecast reporting
- Confidence engaging senior executives and technical stakeholders
- Ability to work through procurement, panel and tender environments
- Willingness to travel to regional and client locations
- Authentic, grounded and values-aligned style
The following skills would be valuable so if you have experience in this space please highlight:
- Local government or public-sector infrastructure experience
- Roads, asset management, disaster recovery exposure
- Experience commercialising software, data products or recurring service models
- Experience with technical engineering or asset-intelligence platforms
- Formal problem centric sales training
- Experience scaling a small commercial team where you have been hands on and in the detail of the entire pipeline
