About the role
The Deputy Chief Executive Officer (DCEO) is a key executive leadership position responsible for supporting the CEO in the strategic, operational, and cultural leadership of the organisation. Working in partnership with the CEO, the DCEO provides oversight of corporate operations, people and culture, governance, organisational performance, and strategic growth, ensuring the delivery of high-quality, culturally safe services that align with the principles of an Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation. The DCEO co-leads the Executive Leadership Team, drives organisational capability and continuous improvement, and acts on behalf of the CEO when required. The role is instrumental in fostering a high-performing, values-driven organisation that delivers sustainable outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.
What you'll be doing
- Executive Leadership and Organisational Management: Provide strategic and operational leadership in partnership with the CEO to drive organisational performance, accountability, and achievement of strategic objectives.
- Operational Leadership and Performance: Lead the delivery and continuous improvement of organisational operations, systems and processes to ensure efficient, effective and sustainable services.
- People and Culture: Provide executive leadership of workforce strategy and culture, fostering a high-performing, engaged, and culturally safe workplace.
- Strategic Planning and Organisational Development: Drive the implementation of strategic priorities, organisational growth initiatives, and transformational change to strengthen long-term sustainability.
- Governance, Risk and Compliance: Ensure robust governance, compliance, and risk management frameworks support organisational integrity, accountability, and performance.
- Stakeholder Engagement and Partnerships: Build and maintain strong relationships with key stakeholders, partners, and funding bodies to enhance collaboration and organisational outcomes.
- Financial and Resource Management: Support responsible financial stewardship and resource allocation to achieve organisational priorities and maximise value.
- Cultural Leadership: Champion Aboriginal Community Control by embedding cultural safety, community accountability and culturally informed practices across the organisation.
- Other Responsibilities: Undertake additional duties as required while maintaining the highest standards of professionalism, integrity and confidentiality.
About You
You’re someone who:
- Builds strong, respectful relationships with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
- Brings experience in a similar senior/executive leadership role
- Is passionate about making a positive impact and supporting others with heart and purpose
Selection criteria
- Demonstrated senior executive leadership experience in an ACCHO or similar organisation, with the ability to lead organisational performance, strategic initiatives and multidisciplinary teams
- Demonstrated success in leading workforce strategies, organisational culture, leadership development and employee engagement within a diverse workforce.
- Strong understanding of governance frameworks, organisational compliance obligations, risk management principles, and Board reporting requirements
- Demonstrated experience contributing to budget development, financial oversight, resource allocation and ensuring organisational sustainability.
- Demonstrated understanding of, and commitment to, the principles and values of Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation and improving outcomes for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and their communities.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in business, management, public administration, human resources, health, community services or a related discipline, with postgraduate qualifications highly regarded.
Requirements
- A Blue Card for working with children ('No Card No Start' policy applies)
- National police check
- Current drivers' license.
- LCS2 clearance withing 3 months of commencing employment (this is a risk-assessed role under the Child Protection Act 1999)
- IDENTIFIED POSITION - To perform this role it is essential that the person who holds the position be an Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander person. It is therefore a genuine occupational requirement under section 25 of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1991 that applicants are Australian Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islanders. A Confirmation of Aboriginality will need to be provided.
