About the role
The Community Wellbeing Branch plays a key role in delivering services that support the health, safety and wellbeing of Melbourne's diverse community. Through a broad range of programs and regulatory functions, the branch helps ensure all Melbournians can access the care, support and opportunities they need to thrive.
As part of this branch, the Health Team works to protect and promote public health across the municipality. From monitoring and managing public health risks to supporting compliance with legislative requirements, the team plays a critical role in safeguarding community wellbeing.
As an Environmental Health Officer, you will be responsible for delivering a range of regulatory, compliance and advisory functions that contribute to public and environmental health outcomes. Working within one of our dedicated regulatory teams, you will provide professional advice, conduct inspections and investigations, and support the delivery of key public health initiatives across the City of Melbourne.
A little more about the role
In this role you will:
- Conduct inspections and compliance assessments across food, water and public health premises.
- Investigate public health complaints and incidents, collecting samples and evidence where required.
- Assess and monitor food safety programs to ensure legislative compliance.
- Provide professional advice to businesses, stakeholders and community members on environmental health matters.
- Maintain accurate records, reports and regulatory documentation.
- Support the delivery of council public health programs and initiatives.
- Contribute to emergency management and public health response activities when required.
- Apply relevant legislation, policies and procedures to achieve positive regulatory outcomes.
- Work collaboratively with internal and external stakeholders to promote public health best practice.
- Contribute to a positive, professional and customer-focused team culture.
About you
You are a qualified Environmental Health Officer who is passionate about protecting public health and delivering positive community outcomes.
You have strong investigative and problem-solving skills, coupled with a practical understanding of environmental health legislation and regulatory frameworks. You enjoy working with a broad range of stakeholders and can confidently balance compliance responsibilities with a customer-focused approach.
You are highly organised, able to manage competing priorities, and committed to delivering quality outcomes in a dynamic local government environment.
What your experience might look like
- Bachelor of Applied Science (Environmental Health) or equivalent qualification.
- Eligibility for membership with Environmental Health Australia.
- Experience applying environmental health legislation, regulations and local government policies.
- Demonstrated experience conducting inspections, investigations and compliance activities.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
- Experience preparing reports, maintaining records and documenting regulatory activities.
- Proven ability to work collaboratively within a team environment and contribute positively to team goals.
- Sound judgement and decision-making skills when assessing complex health and compliance matters.
- Current Victorian Driver Licence.
