Portal Contractors is a specialist earthworks and excavation contractor delivering complex basement and civil works on Tier 1 commercial projects across Melbourne. From deep excavation and bulk earthworks to piling, capping beams, shotcrete walls, and full retention systems.
We're looking for an experienced Excavator Operator to join our crew on major civil and structural projects. This is hands-on, high-volume work for an operator who knows their machine, works safely, and can move dirt accurately and on program in tight, deep basement environments.
What you'll be doing
- Operating excavators safely and productively across live earthworks and excavation sites
- Bulk and detailed excavation, batter trimming and working to set-out levels and tolerances
- Loading trucks, spoil management and maintaining clean, organised work zones
- Working in tight, deep basement environments around retention structures, services and other plant
- Assisting piling, capping beam and retention operations as directed
- Daily pre-start checks, greasing and routine maintenance to keep the machine in top condition
- Monitoring ground conditions and flagging issues early
- Working closely with surveyors, spotters and the wider crew to keep work safe and on schedule
What you need
- Proven experience operating excavators on commercial or civil projects
- White Card (General Construction Induction Card)
- RIIMPO320F – Conduct Civil Construction Excavator Operations (excavator ticket)
- Verification of Competency (VOC) on the machine(s) operated
- Strong understanding of set-out, levels, tolerances and safe excavation practice
- Reliable attendance — you show up, on time, every day
- Ability to work outdoors in all conditions
- Good communication and the ability to follow directions safely
- Valid driver's licence

Experience
- Excavator operation: 2 years (Required)
Licence/Certification
- White Card (Required)
- RIIMPO320F – Conduct Civil Construction Excavator Operations (Required)
- Verification of Competency (VOC) – Excavator (Required)
- CFMEU Membership (Required)

Pay: $45.00 – $60.00 per hour
