Residential Care Youth Workers provide direct care and support to young people who are unable to live safely at home and are placed in residential care.
This is not a disability support role. Instead, you will support young people who may have experienced significant trauma, family breakdown, abuse, neglect, or other complex life circumstances. Your role is to provide a safe, stable, and therapeutic home environment while helping young people develop the skills and confidence they need to thrive.
No two shifts are the same. On any given day, you may be:

Supporting young people to attend school, appointments, and community activities

Preparing meals and maintaining a safe, welcoming home environment

Helping young people develop independent living skills such as cooking, budgeting, personal care, and routines
-
Building positive relationships through consistent, therapeutic interactions
-
Supporting young people to manage emotions, behaviours, and challenges in a safe and respectful way
-
Responding to incidents and providing de-escalation and crisis support when required
-
Working alongside families, schools, case managers, therapists, and other professionals involved in a young person's care
-
Completing case notes, reports, medication administration records, and other documentation required for quality care and compliance

Saturday: 4:00pm – 1:00am

Sunday: 4:00pm – 1:00am

Wednesday: 3:30pm – 12:00am

Thursday: 4:00pm – 1:00am

Friday: 4:00pm – 1:00am
To be successful in this role, you will have:
-
Experience working with young people in Out of Home Care, Residential Care, Youth Work, Disability, Mental Health, or a related field
-
A strong commitment to trauma-informed and therapeutic practice
-
Excellent relationship-building and communication skills
-
The ability to work collaboratively as part of a team while also working autonomously
-
Sound judgement and the ability to respond effectively in challenging situations
-
Certificate IV in Child, Youth and Family Intervention (Residential and Out of Home Care) or an approved equivalent qualification
-
Current Australian Driver Licence
-
Current Victorian Employee Working with Children Check
-
Current First Aid Certificate
-
Willingness to undertake a National Police Check
Important Information
Applicants must meet the Residential Care qualification requirements set by the Department of Families, Fairness and Housing (DFFH), including completion of any mandatory upskilling requirements where applicable. Ongoing employment is subject to meeting these requirements within the prescribed timeframes.

While some skills are transferable from Disability Support work, Residential Care focuses specifically on supporting young people in statutory care arrangements and requires a strong understanding of trauma-informed practice, therapeutic care, and child and adolescent development.
