Position Overview
The Casual Chef – Level 2 supports CU29’s kitchen operations by assisting with basic food preparation, simple cooking tasks, and maintaining high standards of cleanliness and organization. This role is suited to cooks who are developing their skills, working under supervision, and contributing to the delivery of CU29’s high-quality dining experience.
Level 2 classification recognizes employees who perform routine kitchen duties, assist in preparing and presenting food, and operate standard kitchen equipment under the direction of more senior chefs.
Key Responsibilities
Food Preparation & Basic Cooking
Assist with basic food preparation such as chopping vegetables, preparing garnishes, and portioning ingredients.
Cook simple menu items under the supervision of senior kitchen staff.
Follow recipes and instructions to ensure consistency in flavor, quality, and presentation.
Kitchen Organization
Set up workstations and assist with mise en place for service.
Store, label, and rotate stock according to CU29’s food safety procedures.
Assist with receiving, unpacking, and storing deliveries.
Cleaning & Hygiene
Maintain high levels of cleanliness in kitchen areas, including work surfaces, equipment, and storage areas.
Follow HACCP, food safety regulations, and WHS procedures at all times.
Ensure waste is disposed of correctly, following recycling and environmental guidelines.
Teamwork & Communication
Work collaboratively with the culinary team to ensure smooth service flow.
Respond promptly to requests from senior chefs during service.
Participate in training sessions to develop cooking skills and kitchen knowledge.

Qualifications & Experience
Certificate II in Kitchen Operations or progress towards Certificate III in Commercial Cookery (preferred but not essential).
Minimum of 2 years' experience in a kitchen environment is required.
Understanding of basic food safety and hygiene requirements.
Flexible availability for shifts, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays.
