About the Role
This role reports to the Senior Underwriter – Medical Indemnity and is responsible for supporting the assessment and underwriting of practitioners, members and practices for both new and renewal business across all sales channels.
The role ensures underwriting activities are completed accurately, efficiently and in accordance with underwriting guidelines, service standards and regulatory obligations, while delivering a high standard of service to internal and external stakeholders.
Key Accountabilities
People Leadership and Team Development
- Provide day-to-day leadership, guidance and support to the Assistant Underwriter role.
- Support the onboarding, training and development of junior team members to build technical capability and underwriting knowledge.
- Foster a collaborative, accountable and high-performing team environment.
- Assist with workflow management, prioritisation and knowledge sharing across the team.
- Provide coaching and constructive feedback to support individual development and performance outcomes.
Cosmetic Practice Subject Matter Expertise (SME)
- Act as the key Subject Matter Expert (SME) for cosmetic practice underwriting matters across the business.
- Manage the assessment and ongoing administration of cosmetic minor and cosmetic major practice processes.
- Maintain and continuously improve underwriting documentation, procedures, guidelines and policy wording relating to cosmetic practice risks.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with Medical Advisors and other key stakeholders to support risk assessment and decision making.
- Provide technical support and guidance to internal stakeholders on cosmetic practice underwriting requirements and emerging risks.
- Monitor industry trends, regulatory developments and claims insights relating to cosmetic practice to support continuous improvement and risk management outcomes.
Underwriting and Risk Assessment
- Assess and manage new business and renewal applications in line with underwriting guidelines,delegated authority levels and organisational risk appetite.
- Apply sound underwriting judgement to determine appropriate terms, pricing, endorsements and referral requirements.
- Ensure underwriting decisions are accurate, compliant and aligned with regulatory obligations and internal policies.
- Manage workflows and turnaround times to ensure service standards and stakeholder expectations are consistently achieved.
- Act as a referral point for complex underwriting matters and provide technical guidance to team members and internal stakeholders.
Stakeholder and Member Management
- Deliver high-quality service to members, insureds and internal stakeholders through timely and professional communication.
- Build and maintain strong working relationships across Underwriting, Sales, Member Services,Claims and other business units.
- Support portfolio growth and member retention through effective stakeholder engagement and collaboration.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives that enhance operational efficiency, member experience and underwriting outcomes.
Key Capabilities Required (Qualifications, Experience and Skills)
- 5+ years’ experience within the insurance industry.
- Extensive hands-on experience training, coaching and developing junior team members.
- Strong understanding of risk assessment, policy interpretation and underwriting decision making.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to communicate effectively with a broad range of stakeholders.
- Demonstrated ability to build strong working relationships and collaborate effectively across teams.
- Strong organisational and time management skills, with the ability to manage competing priorities and meet deadlines.
- Ability to perform effectively under pressure and adapt quickly to changing priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrated ability to learn, interpret and apply new information, processes and regulatory requirements.
- Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving capability and attention to detail.
- Proficiency in using underwriting systems, technology and business applications.
Preferred Capabilities (Qualifications, Experience and Skills)
- Previous people leadership or people management experience.
- Demonstrated experience applying underwriting principles, policies and procedures.
- Previous underwriting experience within medical indemnity.
- Knowledge of cosmetic practice, procedures and associated risks.
- Knowledge and understanding of the Australian medical indemnity environment.
- Experience working with complex or non-standard risks.
- Experience contributing to process improvement and operational efficiency initiatives.
