In October 2026, Birthing Services at John Hunter Hospital will move into the brand-new JHH North building and we are looking for Registered Midwives who want to be part of what comes next.
From physiological birth and water birth to complex tertiary maternity care, emergency maternity assessment, continuity of care and homebirth, JHH offers the opportunity to experience an incredibly diverse scope of midwifery practice — all within one service.
Whether you are an experienced midwife looking for your next challenge, or earlier in your career and wanting somewhere to build your confidence and skills, there is a place to grow within our team.
A New Home for Birthing Services
Our purpose-built JHH North facilities will include:
-
A brand-new Level 6 Birth Suite, providing care across the full spectrum of pregnancy and birth complexity
-
A stand-alone Birth Centre, separate from Birth Suite and designed to support physiological birth
-
Water immersion and water birth facilities across our birthing environments
-
A dedicated Emergency Maternity Service (EMS)
-
Contemporary spaces designed around women, families and the midwives caring for them
This is an opportunity to join us as we move into our new home and help shape the next chapter of Birthing Services.
More than one way to practise midwifery
Our service includes:
-
Birth Suite – from physiological birth through to highly complex tertiary maternity care
-
Birth Centre Team – supporting low-risk pregnancy, physiological labour and birth
-
Emergency Maternity Service – maternity assessment, clinical decision-making and advanced skills
-
Belmont Midwifery Group Practice – including homebirth
-
Hunter Midwifery Group Practice
-
M3T – our high-risk Midwifery Group Practice model
Midwives have opportunities for development and secondment across our models of care, allowing you to broaden your experience and explore where your passion for midwifery might take you.
For those interested in leadership or education, there are also opportunities to develop your leadership skills through Clinical Lead roles, acting opportunities and other leadership positions across Birthing Services.
Whether you want to strengthen your clinical practice, experience continuity of care, develop advanced skills or take the next step towards leadership, there are opportunities to grow within our service.
Come here to grow
We want our midwives to continue learning, developing and feeling confident in their practice.
At JHH, you can build experience in complex and high-risk maternity care while continuing to develop the skills at the heart of midwifery - supporting physiological birth, water birth, continuity and individualised care. You will work alongside midwives, Clinical Lead Midwives, educators, midwifery leaders and multidisciplinary teams who bring a wealth of experience to our service.
We are looking for midwives who are compassionate, curious and willing to learn; who value teamwork and kindness; who support the midwife beside them when things get busy; and who want women and families to feel safe, respected and heard.
Be part of what comes next - If you have been thinking about a change, want to broaden your experience, or are looking for somewhere you can continue to grow without narrowing your midwifery practice, we would love to hear from you.
