Primary objective
As part of the Territory Pathology leadership team, be the principal scientific authority and manager of Chemical Pathology; contributing
to the provision of a safe, efficient, clinically responsive, comprehensive diagnostic, analytical and advisory service for Territory Pathology
clients based in Darwin but supporting across the Northern Territory
Context statement
The Department of Chemical Pathology provides highly specialised, comprehensive diagnostic and consultative pathology services to
acute, sub-acute, and community healthcare sectors. Operating as a core pillar of modern clinical medicine, the laboratory investigates
diseases through the analysis of blood and other body fluids, covering areas such as endocrinology, toxicology, therapeutic drug
monitoring, and biochemical genetics. The position maps to CF8 in the Northern Territory Capability Framework.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in
order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces within the work team environment and available human and financial
resources. Maintain National Association Testing Authorities (NATA) accreditation.
2. Provide direction to team members regarding the purpose and importance of their work with respect to the Strategic Plans of Territory
Pathology and Department of Health, identifying any critical gaps, and then weighing up options to identify best practice and
innovative options to address the identified challenges, within available human and financial resources through both briefing papers
and business cases.
3. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour to harness an understanding
of these benefits within the team to enhance interactions as a means of building and sustaining relationships with key personnel
internal and external to the work team.
4. Operate as an effective representative of Territory Pathology in public and external forums, providing impartial and forthright advice,
challenging important issues constructively while acknowledging and learning from mistakes. Take personal responsibility for meeting
objectives, proactively moving forward despite criticism or setbacks. Self-evaluate performance, committing to self-development and

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Education and Qualifications Possession of a Medical Laboratory Science degree, or equivalent, is a minimum mandatory qualification
requirement. Possession of a relevant Fellowship, PhD, or other higher qualification in pathology in a related pathology field is
desirable.
2. Work History and Experience A minimum of seven years clinical work experience in a clinical pathology service with a period of
employment commensurate with all the elements identified in this job description is required. Demonstrated commitment to the
effective management of competency assessment across a pathology team is mandatory.
3. Knowledge and Skills: The demonstration of an in-depth technical knowledge and skills in Clinical Chemistry along with quality
management practises and the management of team resources is mandatory. Demonstrated ability to present messages in a clear,
articulate and concise manner, using an appropriate medium, to achieve outcomes that deliver benefits to both parties is highly
desirable.
4. Personal Attributes: Demonstrated ability to act ethically and professionally with flexibility and adaptability during times of
organisational changes. Demonstrated commitment to personal development, and ability to critically analyse own performance to
identify strengths, capabilities and development areas. Encourage and provide opportunities for others to develop and apply new skills
