Love the idea of working outside, learning a trade, and being part of a great crew? This hands-on role will see you helping to maintain and preserve our city’s parks and gardens. As a Horticulture Apprentice with Wagga Wagga City Council, you’ll earn while you learn, gaining practical skills and knowledge working full-time while completing a Certificate III in Parks and Gardens, supported by an experienced, friendly crew.

During your apprenticeship, you may have the opportunity to obtain:

Traffic Control Work Training

Civil Equipment tickets and licences (Bobcat, Loader, Excavator)

MR/HR Licence

AQF3 Chemical Accreditation

First Aid Certificate
Your new role:
-
Assist with establishing and maintaining garden and landscape areas
-
Assist in gardening duties including lawns, planting, pruning, pest control, mowing, weeding and irrigation

Assist with maintenance of facilities, rubbish removal, traffic/pedestrian management, fencing, concreting, paving and site safety and security
-
Learn to use and maintain plant, equipment, tools and personal protective equipment in accordance with Council standards

Work as part of a supportive team, building your skills, confidence and trade qualification
This role is best suited to someone who:
-
Likes (or at least has a positive attitude towards) working outdoors in all weather conditions (sun, rain, heat, cold, wind.. you get the gist)

Is reliable, focused and able to follow instructions
-
Brings good communication skills and enjoys being part of a team

Is patient, willing to learn, and will put in the study required while working
What you will need to succeed:

Willingness to work and study, undertaking a Certificate III in Parks and Gardens

Class P1, P2 or C Driver’s Licence (desirable)
-
White Card
-
A positive attitude and strong work ethic
In accordance with Work Health and Safety legislation, the successful applicant is required to be vaccinated for Hepatitis A and Hepatitis B and will be asked to provide evidence of this.
The Reality Check
The work is physical. It’s outdoors in all weather conditions. But if you’re up for the challenge, you’ll come away with a nationally recognised qualification, loads of transferable skills, a trade that’s always in demand and offers plenty of career opportunities.
