As our transport operations continue to grow, we are seeking an experienced Welder to support the fabrication, repair and maintenance of metal components and equipment used across our fleet and transport operations.
About the Role
The welder will be responsible for carrying out welding, fabrication and metal repair work on a range of transport-related equipment and components, including trailers, loading structures, gates, brackets, ramps, frames, racks, supports and other metal components used throughout our logistics operations.
The successful applicant will have strong technical welding skills, the ability to accurately interpret drawings and specifications, and a commitment to producing safe and high-quality work.
Responsibilities and Duties
Responsibilities and duties include, but are not limited to:
- Interpret technical drawings, blueprints, sketches and job specifications to determine welding, fabrication and repair requirements for transport equipment and metal components.
- Inspect job requirements and select appropriate metal stock, materials and welding processes according to the required specifications.
- Select, clean and prepare steel, aluminium and other metal materials prior to welding and fabrication.
- Measure, mark and cut metal sections and components to required dimensions using hand tools, flame-cutting equipment, grinders, saws and metal-cutting machinery.
- Shape, form and bend metal sections, pipes, brackets and other components using hand tools, mechanical equipment, controlled heating and other appropriate fabrication techniques.
- Accurately position, align and secure metal components prior to welding using measuring instruments, clamps, jigs and specialised hand tools.
- Fabricate, assemble and repair metal components used on trailers, loading equipment, gates, ramps, racks, supports and other transport-related equipment.
- Join metal sections and components using appropriate welding techniques, including MIG, TIG and Arc welding, as well as bolting and riveting where required.
- Carry out welding repairs to damaged or worn metal components to assist in maintaining the safe and reliable operation of transport and logistics equipment.
- Inspect completed welds for bead width, penetration, strength, alignment, dimensional accuracy and overall workmanship to ensure required specifications and quality standards are achieved.
- Identify welding defects and undertake corrective welding, grinding or finishing work where necessary.
- Clean and finish fabricated and repaired metal components using grinding, filing, polishing, chiselling and other appropriate finishing techniques.
- Remove excess weld material and smooth welded joints using grinders, files and other finishing equipment to produce accurate and professional finishes.
- Maintain welding machines, fabrication tools and associated workshop equipment in safe and serviceable condition.
- Follow workplace health and safety procedures, safe welding practices and relevant operational requirements when undertaking fabrication and repair activities.
- Maintain a clean, organised and safe work area and correctly store welding equipment, tools and materials.
- Work collaboratively with fleet, maintenance and operations personnel to prioritise welding and fabrication requirements and minimise equipment downtime.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful applicant will:
- Have a relevant trade qualification such as a Certificate III or Certificate IV in Engineering – Fabrication Trade, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
- Have a minimum of 3 years of relevant full-time experience working as a welder, welder/fabricator or in a closely related metal fabrication position.
- Possess strong attention to detail and the ability to inspect completed welds for penetration, accuracy and workmanship.
- Demonstrate good organisational and time-management skills, including the ability to prioritise repair and fabrication work and meet operational deadlines.
- Have strong verbal communication skills and the ability to work effectively with workshop, fleet and operations team members.
- Have a strong understanding of workplace health and safety requirements and safe welding and fabrication practices.
Pay: $80,000.00 – $82,000.00 per year
