About the Department / Program
The Chief Nursing and Midwifery Office provide strategic, professional and operational leadership for Monash Health’s nursing and midwifery workforce. Bringing together the Workforce, Professional Practice, Education, Mental Health Education, Prevention of Violence and Aggression and Practice Improvement teams, the Office drives workforce capability, professional standards, clinical governance and continuous improvement. Working in partnership with clinical services across the organisation, the Office supports nurses and midwives at every stage of their career to deliver safe, high-quality and compassionate care for our community.
The Nursing and Midwifery Practice Improvement Team operates within the Chief Nursing and Midwifery Office and provides organisation-wide leadership in the delivery of integrated, system-level initiatives that align with Monash Health’s strategic, workforce and quality priorities.
Working in partnership with clinical programs and corporate functions, the team supports strategic priorities through the adoption of innovative approaches and translation of evidence into sustainable practice improvements.
The team is responsible for co-design, testing, and implementation of sustainable improvements which reduce inefficiencies, streamline workflows, and promote safe, effective patient-centred care in collaboration with nursing and midwifery teams.
About the Role
Join our team as an Assistant Director of Nursing and Midwifery (ADONM) – Practice Improvement in this full-time (part time may be considered), ongoing role based at Monash Medical Centre, with projects taking you across multiple Monash Health sites.
The ADONM provides strategic leadership in partnership with the Deputy Director of Nursing and Midwifery to translate organisational priorities into initiatives which strengthen clinical practice and enhance the quality of patient care. This entails actively seeking, progressing and embedding evidence-based and innovative approaches to practice improvement, as well as leading initiatives endorsed by the Nursing and Midwifery Leadership Committee, in alignment with Monash Health’s strategic plan.
The ADONM role centres on optimising the nursing and midwifery workforce in the delivery of high-quality, person-centred care, addressing practice challenges and delivering sustainable, positive change. Opportunities to champion evidence-based improvements are informed by analytics, reports and research, and require advanced capabilities in project planning to clearly articulate strategies, implementation plans, and outcomes.
You’ll lead a team of Practice Improvement Clinical Support Nurses / Midwives whereby enhancing the visibility and impact of the team across the organisation is essential and relies on strong communication and influencing skills. This is achieved through proactive engagement with internal and external stakeholders, advocating for improvements in clinical care that align with governance requirements, performance indicators, and professional practice standards.
Success in the ADONM position relies on a balance of autonomy and collaboration, enabling independent leadership of projects whilst still contributing effectively within a team environment. Building, nurturing, and sustaining a high performing team is paramount and is supported by strong leadership, interpersonal skills, and a commitment to professional development.
This is a Monday to Friday role, and you will be required to travel and work across to multiple Monash Health sites.
About You
To be successful in this role, you will bring the following demonstrated skills, experience, and attributes:
Registered Nurse and/or Midwife with proven experience in a management or leadership role and evidence of leading practice improvement initiatives
Ability to lead and work autonomously whilst adhering to strategic priorities and governance frameworks, as well as recognising when to escalate and collaborate to drive improvement initiatives
Strategic mindset with innovation at the forefront who proactively seeks macro-level improvement opportunities, who mentors, inspires and influences others in change and leadership development
Strong understanding of evolving workforce dynamics and clinical practice trends including digital optimisation, with the ability to navigate ambiguity and anticipate and respond to future challenges or opportunities
Highly developed organisational and analytical skills to effectively prioritise and manage competing demands in a dynamic environment whilst maintaining high attention to details
Demonstrated experience in developing, leading, implementing and evaluating quality and safety projects to fruition – from audit, data analysis, identification and research to idea generation, design, implementation, evaluation and report
Highly knowledgeable in improvement science, change management methodologies, risk management and mitigation strategies to ensure projects are delivered safely and efficiently
Demonstrated ability to partner with senior stakeholders and collaborate with consumers to enhance service delivery and support change initiatives
Seeks opportunities to partner with external stakeholders in integrating and delivering innovative solutions to clinical practice that align with strategic priorities
Proven ability to achieve key performance indicators and deliver projects to schedule, implementing corrective actions where performance or timelines deviate
Explores funding opportunities such as research grants and prepares business cases to seek endorsement
Essential requirements:
Registered Nurse and/or Midwife with current AHPRA registration
Postgraduate qualification in nursing, health service leadership or management, implementation science, or a related discipline, or currently working towards such a qualification
Ability to travel across Monash Health sites as required to support service, project implementation, and improvement activities
Highly desirable:
Membership with a professional association is desirable
