The Department of Justice and Community Safety is seeking an Industry Officer, Kitchen to provide a critical role at Melbourne Assessment Prison.
About the Business Unit
The Melbourne Assessment Prison (MAP) is a maximum-security correctional facility located on the fringe of the Melbourne CBD. The Prison is the State's main reception prison, receiving prisoners directly from the Courts and Police and provides assessment and orientation services for all male prisoners received into the prison system. The MAP also operates St Augustine's and St Vincents hospitals, the Melbourne County Court, Supreme Court and Supreme Court Appeals custody facilities, located on the corners of William and Lonsdale Streets in the CBD. These facilities manage both male and female prisoners of all security ratings, operating Monday to Friday. The location also manages the St Vincent's Hospital holding cells, providing custodial liaison and coordination of all prisoner escorts attending the hospital for medical outpatient appointments from prison locations across the State. Map also looks after the security function at the Adult Parole Board and the Post Sentence Authority located at 50 Franklin Street West Melbourne.
About the Role
A Prison Industry officer should possess highly developed communication, negotiation, and problem-solving skills. The Prison Industry Officer should be flexible and open to learning new skills as the necessity to rotate and support other prison industries as the business needs demand is a requirement of the role.
Prison Industry Officers assist with the management of prisoner employment, safe operating procedures and other OH&S legislative requirements and compliance with prison industry procedures.
Conducting searches and escorts, surveillance, observing and assessing prisoner behaviour, operating a variety of security and industrial equipment, collating information and preparing reports. A prison Industry Officer plays an integral role in developing, implementing, reinforcing and reviewing practice and procedures relating to offender management and security management.
As some of the Prison Industries operate 7 days a week, Industry Officers may be required to work across a 7-day roster.
Some of your duties will include:
- Leading and managing prisoners in the industries areas to ensure the safety and security of prisoners, staff and visitors. This includes maintenance of the integrity of both the external and internal security of the facility, appropriate levels of surveillance and interaction within the facility, and monitoring prisoners for compliance with security and safety procedures.
- Monitor and achieve targets in an industrial environment including administrative tasks related to financial budgets, materials and supplier's records and accounts, while maintaining work production schedules.
- Liaise with internal staff and external stakeholders and provide analytical and informed contributions to develop and deliver programs and processes.
- Manage workflow through production scheduling and forecasting to determine appropriate stocks are available ready for sale.
- Train and instruct prisoners in positive work habits and ensure implementation of safe practices in the workplace.

- Relevant experience in OH&S in an industry setting (preferred).
- Good Computer Skills Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite (preferred).
