Permanent, full-time | $80,000 – $85,000 plus superannuation

About us

Gun Law Office is a legal practice located in Knoxfield, Victoria, providing legal services to individuals, families and businesses.

The firm advises and represents clients across a range of practice areas, including commercial law, corporate law, business transactions, commercial and retail leasing, property law, wills and estates, trusts, family law, family violence matters, civil litigation and general legal advisory work.

The practice assists clients with both transactional and dispute-related matters, including legal advice, document preparation, negotiations, court and tribunal processes, settlements, powers of attorney, affidavits, statutory declarations and cross-border legal documentation.

Due to the evolving needs of the practice, Gun Law Office is seeking a suitably qualified Solicitor to join its team on a permanent, full-time basis.

The role

We are seeking a qualified Solicitor to assist with the day-to-day conduct of client matters, from initial instructions through to finalisation, under the supervision and direction of the Principal and senior legal practitioners where required.

The role will involve assessing client instructions, identifying relevant legal issues, conducting legal research, preparing advice and correspondence, drafting and reviewing legal documents, managing client files, and assisting with negotiations, settlements, court processes and tribunal matters.

The successful candidate will be expected to work across both advisory and dispute-related matters, including preparing matters for conferences, mediations, hearings and other procedural events. The role also involves regular liaison with clients, counsel, courts, tribunals, government authorities, settlement agents, other legal practitioners and external stakeholders.

This position requires strong legal drafting, research, analytical and communication skills. The successful candidate must be able to manage competing deadlines, maintain accurate file records, exercise sound professional judgement and ensure all work is performed in accordance with professional, ethical and regulatory obligations.

Key duties and responsibilities

· Take client instructions, identify legal issues and assist in advising clients on appropriate legal options and processes.

· Conduct legal research and prepare advice, correspondence, file notes, case summaries and other legal documents.

· Draft, review and settle affidavits, statutory declarations, court documents, contracts, leases, settlement documents, powers of attorney, wills and other legal instruments.

· Assist with commercial, corporate, property, conveyancing, leasing, wills and estates, trusts, family law, family violence, civil litigation and dispute resolution matters.

· Prepare matters for court, tribunal, mediation and conference attendances, including reviewing evidence, preparing chronologies, briefing counsel and arranging supporting documents.

· Attend and appear before courts and tribunals where appropriate, including the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia, the Magistrates’ Court of Victoria, VCAT and other relevant courts and tribunals.

· Assist with negotiations, settlements and dispute resolution processes in accordance with client instructions and under supervision.

· Liaise with clients, counsel, courts, tribunals, government authorities, settlement agents, other legal practitioners and external stakeholders.

· Manage client files under supervision from commencement to completion, including maintaining accurate file records, diarising deadlines and monitoring matter progress.

· Prepare, review and witness powers of attorney, statutory declarations, affidavits, certifications and other Australian or overseas legal documents requiring execution, attestation or authentication.

· Assist with cross-border legal documentation, including powers of attorney, statutory declarations, affidavits and related documents used in Sri Lankan or other overseas legal matters.

· Ensure all work is performed in accordance with professional conduct rules, ethical obligations, confidentiality requirements, court rules, regulatory obligations and firm procedures.

Required qualifications, experience and skills

· Admission as an Australian legal practitioner;

· Current Victorian practising certificate, or eligibility to hold one;

· Bachelor of Laws, Juris Doctor or equivalent qualification;

· At least one year of relevant legal experience in private practice, in-house practice, litigation support, family law, property law, conveyancing, commercial advisory work or related legal work;

· Strong legal drafting, research, communication and file management skills;

· Ability to prepare and review legal correspondence, court documents, affidavits, contracts, leases, settlement documents, wills, powers of attorney and other legal instruments;

· Ability to manage competing deadlines, work under supervision and attend courts, tribunals, mediations, settlements and client conferences as required; and

· Professional proficiency in Sinhala will be highly regarded as many of the firm’s clients require language support to provide accurate instructions and properly understand legal advice and documents.
