Job Description
What if the evidence that influences healthcare decisions wasn't generated in clinical trials alone?
At AbbVie, we're looking for an exceptional Real World Evidence Manager to join us on a 12 month contract to help transform how we generate, apply and communicate evidence across our portfolio. This is a rare opportunity to build a new capability and influence strategic decisions in the ANZ affiliate.
This is not a traditional Medical Affairs role. This is a role for someone who sees patterns others miss. Someone who can connect scientific evidence, healthcare system data, patient insights and strategic priorities to answer the questions that matter most. You will help redefine how local evidence questions are solved by combining scientific thinking, innovative study design and emerging data sources. Working across multiple therapeutic areas, you will build organisational capability, influence evidence strategy and help position ANZ as a leading affiliate for evidence innovation.
If you're passionate about using real-world evidence to improve patient outcomes and shape the future of healthcare, we'd love to hear from you.
KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
-
Act as the affiliate’s go-to internal expert for translating an evidence gap into candidate RWE study designs.
-
Run rapid “design-lab” and ideation sessions with Medical Managers to explore multiple options (e.g., registries, chart reviews, linked claims/EMR data, pragmatic designs, external control arms, patient-reported outcomes etc.) before any vendor is engaged.
-
Produce feasibility-aware design concepts, PICO framing and mock study synopses so that, when external partners are needed, briefs are sharper and scopes (and costs) are smaller.
-
Critically appraise and, where possible, insource work previously commissioned to external consultancies, and advise on when external support genuinely adds value versus when it does not.
-
Bring an external, cross-industry and academic perspective to identify novel data sources and methods relevant to the Australian and New Zealand healthcare systems.
-
Map available real-world data assets (local registries, PBS/MBS-type datasets, hospital and EMR data, patient cohorts, etc.) and match them to priority local evidence gaps.
-
Champion creative, “outside-the-box” approaches to local questions on access, quality use of medicines and standard-of-care evolution, including designs that are faster, cheaper or more patient-relevant than the default.
-
Scan the horizon for emerging methodologies (AI/ML-enabled analytics, digital health data, secondary use of data, etc.) and translate them into practical options for ANZ.
-
Design and deliver a practical study design capability program (workshops, coaching, office hours, worked examples, etc.) so Medical Managers can independently think through evidence generation options.
-
Build sustainable and reusable tools and playbooks (design templates, decision trees, “when to use which study type” guides, data-source directory etc.).
-
Coach Medical Managers one-to-one on live evidence questions, growing confidence and consistency in RWE thinking across therapeutic areas.
-
Leave the team measurably more self-sufficient in RWE ideation and design by the end of the engagement.
-
With the Evidence Solutions Manager, represent ANZ in the International RWE Community and RACE forums, importing external ideas, best practice and repurposable designs from other affiliates.
-
Feed high-value local evidence gaps and innovative designs into the LET and RACE program to accelerate generation and pull-through.
-
Share ANZ learnings back to Area/Global to raise the affiliate’s profile as a source of evidence innovation.
-
Report any adverse event within 24 hours as per AbbVie’s policies and procedures.
-
Proactively participate in AbbVie’s WHS programs, adhere to policies and promote a safe work environment at all times.
-
Adhere to AbbVie’s internal codes of conduct and compliance processes.
-
Other ad hoc duties such as administrative duties, as requested.
Qualifications
-
Postgraduate qualification in Epidemiology, Biostatistics, Public Health, Health Economics, Real-World Evidence, Pharmaceutical Medicine or a related discipline, or equivalent experience (see below).
-
Deep, hands-on expertise in RWE and observational study design across multiple methodologies and data types.
-
Proven ability to coach, train and build capability in non-specialists, translating complex methods into plain language.
-
Strong influencing skills in a matrixed environment and a genuinely creative, solution-oriented mindset.
-
Demonstrated experience designing real-world studies, ideally gained in a CRO, consultancy, academic or analytics setting, that can now be brought in-house.
-
Familiarity with AI/ML and advanced analytics applied to real-world data.
-
Knowledge of the Australian and New Zealand healthcare data landscape and access/HTA environment.
-
Existing networks across academia, research groups and RWD vendors.
Flexibility and Availability: In line with Australia’s 'Right to Disconnect' legislation, we recognise and respect employees' right to refuse contact outside of their working hours, unless such refusal is deemed unreasonable. As we operate in an international, matrixed environment, there may be occasions where your role requires participation in business meetings outside of standard hours. We value and support flexibility and appreciate your willingness to occasionally accommodate these requests to ensure effective collaboration and communication within our global team.
