Ophthalmology, Trainee Unaccredited Position, Nepean Hospital

Employment Type: Temporary Full Time (01-Feb-2027 to 06-Feb-2028)

The Trainee is responsible for the examination, diagnosis and management of patients with ophthalmic conditions within the clinical setting. Inpatient care - Management of inpatients in association with consultant medical staff. Daily check of in-patients. Communicate with nursing staff, and orthoptists involved in patient care. Outpatient clinics - Attend Preadmission clinic. Meetings - Attend clinical/teaching sessions.

What you'll be doing

Position supports the medical officers and staff specialists in ophthalmology by assisting in the ophthalmology outpatients department, ward and preadmission areas of the hospital. Report diagnostic imaging examinations and conduct imaging guided procedures commensurate with level of training and assessed competency in a supervised environment. Manage patients with ophthalmology conditions and trauma and be able to take a comprehensive ophthalmic history as well as other relevant history. Ability to present an ophthalmic case history in a succinct manner to consultants.
Perform a systematic examination of the eye to diagnose injury and other conditions Interpret ophthalmic imaging modalities including radiographs and CT scans. Developed a basic understanding and interpretation of MRI scans.
Appreciation of the social impact of eye injury/ condition on the patient. Understand the role of paramedical staff, administrative, orthoptic and nursing staff in the care and management of the ophthalmic patient. Be able to perform common ophthalmic procedures - applanation tonometry, slit lamp examination, A and B scans. Gain confidence in presentations/ public speaking.
Liaise with medical officers and other clinical staff, orthoptists, nursing staff, consultants regarding patient care Manage patients with ophthalmology conditions and trauma.
The Trainee is expected to consult frequently with other medical staff in all aspects of care. Once approved by a Staff Specialist the following procedures may be undertaken unsupervised: Removal of foreign bodies from the eye including central axis foreign bodies. Removal of eyelashes using epilation. Retinal examination. Ordering ophthalmic medications. Slit lamp examination. The Trainee is not expected to supervise other staff members. However, from time to time they may be asked to help in the teaching of medical, nursing, and orthoptic students. Communicate patient-relevant information in a timely and clear manner to patients and their families/carers, the AMO, and all staff involved in the patient’s care, to facilitate shared decision-making and timely information transfer.

Essential requirements

MBBS or equivalent, currently registered with the Medical Board of Australia in an appropriate registration category.
At least three years' postgraduate experience in public hospital service (or equivalent).
Recent relevant clinical experience required to undertake the key accountabilities for this role.
This position is subject to an appropriate supervision level which can be supported by the health agency. If the incumbent’s registration conditions include supervision requirements, the level of supervision must be able to be supported by the health agency for this role.
Valid Working with Children Check, cleared National Police Check.
To be employed by NSW Health you are required to provide evidence of vaccination to comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening & Vaccination against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy, this includes any amendments made from time to time.

Selection criteria

Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role.

Demonstrated clinical practice as a registered medical practitioner in the last 2 years in a setting appropriate to the needs of the position.

Demonstrated ability to manage patients with ophthalmology conditions and trauma and attend pre-admission clinics, determine suitability for surgery, arrange appropriate tests and complete prescriptions for patients undergoing surgical procedures.

Demonstrated ability to perform a systematic examination of the eye to diagnose injury and other conditions, including retinal examination.

Demonstrated ability to interpret ophthalmic imaging modalities including radiographs and CT scans.

Demonstrated ability to present an ophthalmic case history in a succinct manner to consultants.

Demonstrated understanding of the role of paramedical staff – orthoptists, nurses and social workers in the care and management of the ophthalmic patient.

Demonstrated skills to perform common ophthalmic procedures, including applanation tonometry, slit lamp examination, A and B scans
