Primary objective
Gain midwifery skills, knowledge and attitudes in accordance with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia’s Midwifery Standards.
Midwifery students will complete all course requirements in order to be eligible for registration as a Registered Midwife with the Nursing
and Midwifery Board of Australia.
Context statement
The employed model is an exciting initiative of NT Health, Charles Darwin University and Katherine Hospital is offering Registered Nurses
paid employment for two years while undertaking study in the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery through Charles Darwin University (CDU).
Successful applicants must be eligible for employment with NT Health as a registered nurse, meet CDU enrolment criteria and be eligible
for a commonwealth supported place (CSP). Successful applicants will have completed a graduate year as an RN at the time of application,
a demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced acute care environment, and within the registered nurse/midwifery student scope of
practice. One intake will be recruited to.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide safe, quality midwifery care in a complex multicultural environment.
2. Compliance to local procedures, guidelines and protocols whilst functioning according to legislation and Department of Health
policies.
3. Enhance the professional development of self and others using evidence based research and by actively contributing to midwifery
unit and service activities.
4. Contribute to an environment of clinical excellence that promotes safety, security and personal integrity of clients, families and
colleagues.
5. Meet Charles Darwin University academic course and clinical practicum requirements through collaboration with and guidance from
midwives and other health professionals.
6. Effective and professional participation as a member of the multidisciplinary team through communication, collaboration and problem
solving.
7. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken in
order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
8. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Current registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA) or eligible for same.
2. Eligible for enrolment at Charles Darwin University in the Graduate Diploma of Midwifery (TMIDW1).
3. Demonstrated competency and at least twelve months recent nursing experience in an acute care setting.
4. Demonstrated experience conducting accurate, comprehensive and systematic assessments, analysing information and data and
communicating outcomes as the basis for practice.
5. Demonstrated collaboration with clients, organisations and the wider multi-disciplinary team to ensure best clinical outcomes.
6. Demonstrated effective communication skills to engage others in a mature, confident manner to achieve positive client outcomes,
including providing information and/or advice on clinical issues within scope of practice
7. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social and cultural issues, influences and sensitivities that influence
nursing/midwifery care provision for client and families.
