About the Opportunity
An exciting permanent part-time opportunity is available for an Enrolled Nurse – StEPS Vision Screener to join the Statewide Eyesight Preschooler Screening (StEPS) program. Based at Gloucester Community Health Service, this role may also be located at Forster Community Health Service or Taree Community Health Service to suit the successful candidate.
As part of this rewarding community-based role, you'll help improve the health and wellbeing of preschool-aged children by identifying vision concerns early, ensuring they receive timely referral and intervention to support their learning and development. Working largely independently, you'll be supported by your local Child and Family Health/Community Health team as well as the broader StEPS network. You'll build meaningful relationships with families, early childhood education providers and health professionals while working across preschools, childcare centres and community clinics throughout your local area.
This role offers flexibility in how your permanent part-time hours are worked across the week, along with comprehensive orientation and training in the StEPS program to ensure you feel confident and supported from day one.
As an Enrolled Nurse – StEPS Vision Screener, you will provide monocular vision screening for children aged 4–5 years within childcare centres, preschools and community clinic settings.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Travelling to preschools, childcare centres and community clinics throughout your allocated area.
- Setting up, operating and maintaining specialised vision screening equipment.
- Reviewing consent forms and confirming children's eligibility for screening.
- Conducting child-friendly vision assessments in accordance with the StEPS program.
- Accurately documenting screening outcomes and following referral pathways where required.
- Providing information and education to parents, carers and early childhood educators.
- Building positive relationships with families, schools and community stakeholders.
- Maintaining accurate records using electronic documentation systems.
- Working independently while remaining connected to a supportive multidisciplinary team.
We're looking for an enthusiastic and compassionate Enrolled Nurse who enjoys working with children and families and is passionate about promoting healthy childhood development through preventative healthcare.
Our ideal candidate will demonstrate:
- Current registration with AHPRA as an Enrolled Nurse.
- A current Class C Driver's Licence and willingness to travel throughout the local area.
- Experience working with children and an understanding of normal child growth and development.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- The ability to build positive relationships with families, educators and healthcare professionals.
- Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to work independently.
- Confidence using computer systems and a willingness to learn program-specific databases.
- A commitment to delivering safe, compassionate and person-centred community care.
