Moneycare Financial Counsellor – Problem Gambling

Geraldton, WA Permanent part-time – 22.8 hours per week (0.6 FTE)

When people come to Moneycare, they’re often carrying more than overdue bills or financial stress. They’re carrying fear, shame, worry for their families and the weight of circumstances that feel overwhelming. Gambling harm can quietly unravel finances, relationships and wellbeing.

As a Financial Counsellor with The Salvation Army, you stand in that gap. You offer clarity where there is confusion, advocacy where there is powerlessness and hope where people feel stuck. Your work directly contributes to safer households, stronger financial capability and healthier futures for individuals, families and the wider community.

About the role

You will provide holistic, person-centred financial counselling and advocacy to people experiencing financial hardship, with a particular focus on those impacted by problem gambling. This includes assessing each person’s unique circumstances, exploring the interaction between life issues and financial stress, and supporting clients to make informed, sustainable decisions.

You will also have the opportunity to deliver group financial literacy and capability sessions, helping people build skills and confidence to manage their money over the long term.

This is a permanent part-time position of 22.8 hours per week (0.6 FTE) within the Moneycare Western Australia Financial Counselling for Gambling team, based in Geraldton and reporting to the State Manager. Pay is in accordance with a SCHADS Level 5.

How you will make an impact

Undertake comprehensive assessments for intake, case planning and referral

Provide client-centred financial counselling using contemporary practice and trauma-informed approaches

Advocate with creditors, financial institutions and external agencies to achieve fair and realistic outcomes

Support clients to build financial capability, confidence and long-term money management skills

Deliver community education sessions that promote financial literacy and early help-seeking

Maintain high-quality case notes, data and reporting in line with Moneycare and funding requirements

Build strong relationships with local services, community organisations and referral partners

Operate with autonomy while aligning with TSA and Moneycare policies, processes and practice frameworks

What you will bring

Diploma of Financial Counselling (or currently working towards completion) or Diploma of Community Services (Financial Counselling)

Experience supporting people experiencing hardship, crisis or complex life challenges

Strong ability to educate and empower people to build financial capability and confidence to build informed decision-making sills

Strong negotiation and advocacy skills

Demonstrated ability to work within a counselling framework and hold space for people in distress

High level interpersonal, active listening and analytical skills

Ability to manage competing priorities, meet deadlines and work with autonomy

Compassionate, non-judgmental approach and commitment to inclusive practice

Proficiency in Windows Office and confidence with client management systems

A current driver’s licence

A valid employee WA Working with Children's Check
