The opportunity
Join CSIRO's Bioinformatics Products team and help shape the future of genomics-enabled biosecurity.
As a Research Solutions Architect, you will work at the intersection of biology, bioinformatics and software engineering to design and deliver innovative cloud-based solutions that enable researchers to manage, analyse and interpret complex genomic data at scale. Working closely with scientists, engineers and external collaborators, you'll translate research challenges into practical technical solutions that support biosecurity research, surveillance and response activities.
This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to nationally significant research while applying modern software engineering, cloud computing and data analytics approaches to real-world biological problems. You will play a key role in developing scalable platforms, exploring novel computational and machine learning approaches, and helping researchers make effective use of genomic data across health, environmental and biosecurity domains.

Your high-level duties will include:
- Collaborating with scientists to design and implement innovative cloud architecture that supports impactful research and addresses challenges in the health and life science domain.
- Contributing to the design, building, testing and maintenance of software applications and platforms that support the management and analysis of genomic data.
- Working closely with researchers and stakeholders to translate scientific requirements into scalable technical solutions, system designs and software architectures.
- Providing technical advice, guidance and support to researchers and stakeholders to facilitate the effective uptake and use of developed solutions.
- Applying contemporary software engineering and DevOps practices, including version control, testing, automation and deployment workflows, to ensure robust and maintainable solutions.

Salary: AU$118k – AU$127k per annum (pro rata for part-time), plus 15.4% superannuation

As the successful candidate, you will bring:
Essential criteria
- A bachelor’s degree (or will shortly satisfy the requirements of a bachelor’s degree) or equivalent work experience in a relevant discipline area, such as Information Technology, Bioinformatics, Electrical Engineering, Data Science.
- Proven impact from developing solutions on public cloud infrastructure (AWS, Azure, GCP) or advanced high-performance compute (HPC) with demonstrated software engineering practices (use of repositories, deployment standards, efficiency analysis).
- Advanced data analytics and programming capabilities in more than one language relevant for bioinformatics (e.g. Python, Rust, Java, C++, Scala, BASH, R, Julia).
- The ability to build productive relationships and work effectively within multidisciplinary, geographically dispersed teams, while exercising initiative and sound judgement to deliver work independently.
- High level written and verbal communication skills including the ability to explain complex technical concepts to scientific and non-scientific audiences and contribute to reports, presentations, or other forms of knowledge sharing.
Candidates who also demonstrate one or more of the following will be particularly competitive:
- Experience/familiarity with Frontend development using React/Angular.
- Background in, or exposure to, biology, genomics, bioinformatics or a related scientific discipline.
- Experience sharing research outcomes with diverse audiences through online media, including blogs, videos, social media or other digital communication channels (e.g. Blogs, X (formally Twitter), YouTube).
- Experience in DevOps.
