The primary focus of this role is to provide ecological technical support and advice to our clients as an Ecologist within the Queensland ecology team. Time will be shared across field and office work, during which the ecologist will work independently on defined tasks and collaboratively with others to complete ecological assessments in accordance with Government and scientific guidelines. Office-based tasks will include report writing, data processing and analysis, GIS mapping, team meetings and client meetings.
Based on current and expected future projects, the role will support the design and delivery of major road, rail, water and energy projects predominantly in Queensland.

The Opportunity

You will contribute to the ecological components of projects and may manage discrete tasks or work packages with appropriate support and review from senior team members;

You will professionally represent Arup at internal and external meetings, including contributing technical input and communicating clearly with project teams, clients and stakeholders;

You will contribute to the development of ecology project approaches, methodologies and deliverables, with support from senior colleagues where required;

You will be responsible for executing responsibilities as outlined in Arup’s Management System;

You will support the development of junior team members by sharing knowledge, assisting with fieldwork planning and providing day-to-day guidance where appropriate; and

You may assist with project planning, budgets, scopes and supplier coordination to support effective delivery and financial performance.

Is this role right for you?

3–6 years relevant industry experience in a professional working environment, preferably in a consulting role or similar. Experience contributing to Commonwealth referrals, significant impact assessments and ecological assessment reporting for infrastructure or development projects is highly regarded.

3–6 years relevant hands-on experience undertaking field work in terrestrial or aquatic ecology, with experience supporting field surveys and preferably experience within Queensland. Experience contributing to ecological surveys for infrastructure or development projects is highly regarded.

Recognised relevant tertiary qualifications in Ecology, Botany, Zoology, Marine/aquatic sciences, Environmental Science or related discipline.

Field strengths in identifying flora and/or fauna of Queensland, with proficiency in undertaking BioCondition assessments and Regional Ecosystem identification.

You will be required to work independently on defined tasks and as a member of a multidisciplinary team, referring to senior colleagues as necessary. In achieving this, you will support delivery against agreed deadlines, budgets and quality requirements.

Working knowledge and practical understanding of planning and biodiversity legislation and regulations in Queensland and Australia, including the Commonwealth Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999

Experience with GIS and its application for the mapping, analysis and communication of ecological attributes.

Working knowledge of relevant legislation, regulations, codes of practice and guidelines related to biodiversity in Queensland and Australia.

Suitably Qualified Professional (SQP) status for protected plants surveys in Queensland is highly desirable.

Membership of relevant professional institutions/professional peer bodies or significant credit towards eligibility for membership is desirable but not essential.
