The Aboriginal Mental Health & Wellbeing Peer Worker will utilise their lived experiences to support Aboriginal consumers accessing ISLD across both community and inpatient mental health services to support the delivery of culturally safe services. Working within multidisciplinary teams, the Aboriginal Mental Health & Wellbeing Peer Worker will draw upon their personal lived experience with a mental health issue to provide recovery oriented interventions, lived experience counsel and advocacy to consumers, carers, and multidisciplinary staff across the district.
The Aboriginal Mental Health & Wellbeing Peer worker will encourage holistic supports including culture, spirituality, identity and basic needs, work, roles, and responsibilities; education; physical health; and mental health. The position works with consumers in both an individual and group setting to facilitate recovery through the development of skills, strengths and capacity for successful independent community living.
The Aboriginal Mental Health & Wellbeing Peer worker is an integral part of the service and it is expected that the Aboriginal Mental Health & Wellbeing Peer worker will work as equal partners with clinicians in providing proactive community support for Aboriginal people with mental health issues.

Shellharbour Hospital is a busy acute care facility which provides emergency services, elective surgical services, general medicine, antenatal and primary family health care, satellite renal dialysis, and adolescent and adult mental health services on site.
