Full Job Description

Casual Event Chef – Flexible 3–5 Hour Shifts

Flying Woks is looking for experienced casual chefs to join our team for functions and events across Melbourne.

This is something different from a normal restaurant chef role.

We are a mobile catering company and cook fresh food live in front of our guests at corporate events, private functions, weddings and larger events.

Our menus include Asian noodles & curries, pasta, paella and Aussie BBQs.

About the Role

Most of our casual function shifts are approximately 3–5 hours, making this a great opportunity for chefs looking for additional flexible work around another job or other commitments.

Depending on the function, you may:

Prepare and cook food
Cook live in front of guests
Drive a Flying Woks van to and from the function
Set up our mobile cooking and serving equipment
Cook and serve during the event
Pack down equipment after the function
Return the van and equipment to our Ravenhall base
Assist with kitchen preparation when required

Cooking Experience Required

You must have previous commercial cooking experience and be confident working in a kitchen.

However, you don’t need to already know how to cook all of our particular dishes.

We train you in our recipes, menus, equipment and Flying Woks event system.

We’re looking for people who can cook, learn our system and become reliable members of our event team.

Opportunity to Host Functions & Earn More

Once trained, there is also the opportunity to become a Function Host and earn additional money.

Our Function Hosts take greater responsibility for the event, including leading the team, communicating with the customer and making sure the function runs smoothly from setup through to pack-down.

Who We’re Looking For

You’ll ideally be:

Experienced in commercial cooking
Reliable and punctual
Friendly and comfortable around customers
Happy cooking live in front of guests
Comfortable driving our company vans
Willing to help set up and pack down functions
Able to work independently and as part of a team
Available for some evening and weekend functions
Comfortable travelling to different function locations around Melbourne

What We Offer

$40–$60 per hour, depending on experience, duties and applicable rates
Average shifts of approximately 3–5 hours
Flexible casual work

Ravenhall-based commercial kitchen

This role could be particularly suitable for an experienced chef who already has regular employment and wants to pick up extra well-paid casual shifts without committing to another restaurant roster.

If you can cook, you’re reliable, you’re happy to get involved with the whole function — driving, setting up, cooking and packing down — we’d love to hear from you.
