Primary objective
This position takes a key role in the work of the Clinical Rehabilitation team to create safer communities and reduce re-offending through
the co-facilitation of group-based and individual offence specific programs; provides cultural knowledge and brokerage for Aboriginal
people in custody; and cultural advice and input into the assessment of prisoners, delivery of treatment programs, and development of
management and release plans.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Co-facilitate (with a clinician) group-based or individual offence specific programs for prisoners as required.
2. Contribute and provide cultural brokerage and advice in the clinical assessment and treatment of Aboriginal people in custody and
prepare them for suitable treatment programs.
3. Recognise and collaboratively address criminogenic risks and needs identified within assessments and management in consultation
with clinicians.
4. Provide cultural oversight, advice and support for professional and administrative stream staff within Clinical Rehabilitation prison-
based teams.
5. Provide cultural feedback on programs, assessments and reports as required and maintain accurate, clear client case notes, records
and statistics.
6. Comply with Clinical Rehabilitation management procedures, standards and guidelines.
7. Work in partnership and engage with both internal and external stakeholders regarding matters relevant to management, ensuring
cohesive case management of Aboriginal people in prison.
8. Be an active member of a multi-disciplinary team, participate in and provide supervision, peer supervision and ongoing professional
development and training.
9. Carry out duties as requested by the Manager Clinical Rehabilitation.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Familiarity with best practices in assessing and rehabilitating Aboriginal people in custody, along with hands-on experience in
delivering group or individually orientated behavioural change programs.
2. Strong written communication skills, showcasing the capacity to generate high-quality reports and case notes.
3. Exceptional verbal communication skills, enabling effective engagement with a diverse client group and the ability to communicate
with stakeholders in a manner suitable to the audience.
4. Information technology skills with a readiness to acquire new IT competencies, including the utilisation of internal information
databases and Microsoft Office software.
5. Proven capacity to operate efficiently, both autonomously and as an integral part of a multi-disciplinary team, within a complex
therapeutic environment.
6. High level understanding of issues, trends and practices related to Aboriginal people, coupled with the ability to analyse their impact
on the community, and extensive experience in providing cultural advice and/or brokerage.
7. Ability to work as a member of a multi-disciplinary team, willingness to participate in and provide supervision and ongoing
development, and the capability and/or personal qualities suitable to work in a custodial environment.
Desirable
1. Demonstrated sound understanding of, or experience working within, the criminal justice system.
2. Relevant qualifications (e.g. Degree in Psychology/Criminology, Social Work, Community Services, Community).
