Primary objective
The provision of specialist expertise in emergency medicine and of clinical leadership for the ongoing development of a high quality
rural Emergency Department service, including clinical management, supervision of medical staff and delivery of education and
training in emergency medicine.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Provide high quality care and advice on the management of patients presenting to the Emergency Department as a senior
emergency specialist, including leading immediate diagnostic and resuscitative care for life-threatening conditions and
provision of ongoing clinical care until the care of that patient can be assumed by the appropriate service.
2. Provide, coordinate and facilitate diagnosis, patient management and discharge planning, including provision of accurate,
timely and legible medical records, including medical reports and discharge summaries.
3. Direct, coordinate, supervise, manage and evaluate the work of subordinate medical staff, including medical students, in the
provision of patient care.
4. Participate in on-call, after hours and weekend rosters as determined by the Director of Medical Services or delegate.
5. Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including other medical and nursing staff, paramedical and retrieval services at
both clinical and administrative levels.
6. Lead and participate in continuing medical education, professional development, peer review, research and teaching, including
the provision of training to medical and nursing personnel in aspects of emergency medical care.
7. Follow defined service quality standards, work health and safety policies and procedures relating to the work being undertaken
in order to ensure high quality, safe services and workplaces.
8. Foster a positive workplace culture through exemplary leadership practices and role modelling behaviour.
Selection Criteria
Essential
1. Fellowship of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners (RACGP) or Australian College of Rural and Remote
Medicine (ACRRM) or equivalent and eligible for general/specialist registration with the Medical Board of Australia.
2. Broad postgraduate experience including at least 3 years post-Fellowship experience and recent relevant experience in clinical
practice and recent relevant experience in clinical practice.
3. Recognized advanced skills in obstetrics (advanced DRANZCOG), anaesthetics (RGA) or emergency medicine.
4. Demonstrated capacity to lead a multidisciplinary clinical team and provide medical officer supervision.
5. Demonstrated ability to interact positively in a cross cultural work environment.
6. Evidence of commitment to continuing education, teaching, research and quality assurance activities.
Desirable
1. Experience in rural/remote medical practice and /or Australian Indigenous health.
