The Underground Technologies team develops and supports a broad portfolio of solutions including automation and tele-remote machine operation, positioning and production recording, people and vehicle tracking, and proximity awareness and collision avoidance systems. These solutions are deployed globally and help customers safely and efficiently manage their underground mining operations.
The Opportunity
We’re looking for a Sr. Project Lead - Underground Technologies to lead investigation and resolution activities for customer-reported issues across Caterpillar’s underground technology portfolio.
This role sits at the intersection of customer support, engineering, product development, and validation. You will work closely with product support teams, deployment specialists, systems engineers, software developers, architects, and validation teams to understand complex customer challenges, perform deep technical analysis, and drive engineering improvements that enhance product quality and customer outcomes.
What You’ll Do
Lead Customer Issue Resolution
Lead a small technical team responsible for daily customer issue triage across the Underground Technologies product portfolio.
Work closely with Product Support, Deployment, and Application Specialists to understand customer-reported issues and prioritise investigation activities.
Facilitate technical discussions across multiple teams and stakeholders.
Track issue progress from initial report through analysis, root cause identification, and resolution.
Drive Technical Analysis
Perform detailed analysis of customer and engineering data to understand system behaviour and identify root causes.
Develop advanced data collection and experimentation plans to support complex investigations.
Apply modern data analysis techniques and AI-assisted tools to accelerate problem solving and engineering decisions.
Identify product improvement opportunities through analysis of customer issues and operational trends.
Partner with Engineering Teams
Work with architects and software engineering teams to determine corrective actions and long-term product improvements.
Support implementation and validation of engineering solutions.
Provide technical leadership for cross-functional investigations involving hardware, software, communications, and operational systems.
Improve Product Quality
Partner with Systems Integration and Validation teams to improve engineering test coverage, data collection methods, and troubleshooting processes.
Develop better validation approaches for identifying issues before deployment.
Drive continuous improvement in root cause analysis and product quality processes.
Support Underground Technology Solutions
Automation and Tele-remote capabilities for LHDs
Positioning and Production Recording systems
People and Vehicle Tracking solutions
Proximity Awareness and Collision Avoidance technologies
Stakeholder Leadership
Partner with:
Product Support and Deployment teams to understand customer challenges
Software, Systems, and Architecture teams to develop effective solutions
Integration and Validation teams to improve product robustness
Global customers and mining operations to support data-driven investigations
Act as a technical leader who can align teams, communicate complex findings, and drive resolution of highly complex system-level issues.
What You Bring
Experience
Previous experience in underground mining and mining technologies.
Technical leadership experience leading teams or complex engineering initiatives.
Experience troubleshooting and resolving complex systems issues in operational environments.
Experience working across multiple engineering disciplines including software, systems, integration, and validation.
Capabilities
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Ability to lead investigations involving multiple stakeholders and technical disciplines.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
Ability to influence technical direction and drive alignment across organisations.
Experience working in global cross-functional teams.
Technical & Domain Knowledge

Additional Information
Location: This position can be based in either Perth (Bibra Lake) or Brisbane
This position requires working onsite five days a week.
