Primary objective
The Auditor-General is a statutory officer who serves Parliament and acts in the public interest by promoting improved
performance, transparency and accountability across the Northern Territory public sector. This role supports the Auditor-General
in fulfilling his or her duties and responsibilities under the Audit Act 1995 (the Act).
Context statement
A key function of this role is to provide strategic and operational leadership to support the achievement of the vision, mission, and
operational outcomes of NT Auditor-General’s Office (NTAGO). In addition to strong technical capability, the role is responsible
for driving audit quality, maintaining a strong focus on public interest outcomes and embracing the opportunity to make a
difference.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Translate the Auditor-General’s priorities into coordinated, outcome-driven initiatives aligned with strategic objectives,
including the development of leading-edge analytics and contemporary data presentation.
2. Lead the Audit Services function to deliver the annual audit program, including parliamentary reporting, by providing oversight,
guidance, and capability development for NTAGO staff and Audit Service Providers (ASPs).
3. Ensure NTAGO methodologies and quality assurance frameworks are robust and fit for purpose; provide technical advice to
the Auditor-General and effectively manage ASPs.
4. Apply strategic and innovative approaches to audit planning and organisational improvement to achieve excellence in client
service and cost-effective operations.
5. Champion and lead continuous improvement, innovation, organisational change, and staff performance development.
6. Promote good governance, accountability, and performance through effective engagement with senior leaders across the
public sector.
7. Provide quality oversight of complex and high-risk audit and assurance engagements, including exercising signing
responsibilities where required under delegations from the Auditor-General.
8. Maintain proactive engagement with stakeholders to advance NTAGO’s services, remain informed of emerging strategic issues,
and stay abreast of developments in the audit profession and the public sector.
9. Promote and model values-driven behaviours and take reasonable care for own and others’ health, safety, and wellbeing.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. Demonstrated senior leadership experience with a proven ability to lead and manage high-performing teams
2. Extensive audit experience, supported by strong technical and practical expertise, with the ability to apply professional
knowledge across a diverse portfolio of audit clients, including in the public sector.
3. Highly developed strategic and critical thinking skills, with the ability to contribute to forward planning and informed decision-
making at an executive level.
4. Proven ability to build and manage high level stakeholder relationships to drive positive change.
5. Highly developed interpersonal skills, with a demonstrated ability to foster inclusive, collaborative, and productive partnerships
that support a positive and engaged organisational culture.
6. Relevant tertiary qualifications and current membership of a recognised professional accounting or auditing body
