Get hands-on experience working on the trucks, plant and heavy vehicles that support essential services across Blacktown City. As an Apprentice Heavy Vehicle Mechanic, you work in Council's workshop alongside qualified tradespeople, learning how to inspect, service, maintain and repair a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment.

Each day, you assist mechanics with workshop tasks, use tools and equipment safely, follow technical instructions and develop your trade skills through practical experience. You attend TAFE, build your knowledge through on-the-job training, mentoring and repetition of tasks, and progressively take on more responsibility as your skills develop.

The work you do helps keep Council's fleet safe, reliable and ready to support day-to-day operations across the city. By helping maintain the vehicles and equipment used to deliver services to the community, you contribute to the efficient operation of Council and the services residents rely on every day.

This is a paid 4-year apprenticeship that combines practical experience with nationally recognised training. During the first 3 years, you receive structured training and support from qualified tradespeople, with the 4th year focused on practical experience. You complete a Certificate III in Heavy Commercial Vehicle Mechanical Technology and gain the skills, knowledge and experience needed to build a long-term career in the heavy vehicle industry.

This role suits someone who enjoys working with vehicles and machinery, likes solving practical problems and is committed to learning a trade through hands-on experience and formal training.

Who can apply

Applicants must be minimum 15 years of age or older
No longer at school or home-schooled
If currently enrolled in school or home-schooled must:
- Have completed year 9 or equivalent
- Provide written approval to proceed from either a school principal or NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA) or an authorised person acting in lieu of a school principal.
No experience required
Ability to obtain a class C driver’s licence when able to.
