Operator Water Treatment

Organisational Context

east Victoria across an area of 20,000 square kilometres. The service delivery area is bound by Corryong, Yarrawonga,

Benalla and Dartmouth. We operate 21 water treatment facilities and 22 wastewater treatment plants that service most

towns across the region. Over 200 full time equivalent staff are employed at our centres in Wodonga, Wangaratta, Benalla,

Yarrawonga, Corryong, Beechworth, Mount Beauty and Myrtleford.

Our operations are overseen by the Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA) on behalf of the

Minister for Water, and the Department of Treasury and Finance (DTF) on behalf of the Treasurer. We continue to invest in

innovative and long-term capital projects which contribute to the health and well-being of current and future generations.

Position Objectives

The Operator Water Treatment:

Operations: Consistently execute water treatment tasks, ensuring smooth and efficient operations while minimising

disruptions and upholding system integrity to ensure delivery of safe drinking water.

Safety & Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols and standards, maintaining a strong record of safety and

compliance in all water treatment operations.

Team Collaboration & Reporting: Collaborate effectively within the water treatment team, ensuring timely data

input into treatment systems and prompt reporting of operational trends and issues to senior roles.

Key Responsibility Areas

KPIs: Monitor, track, and ensure achievement of set KPIs.

Operational Execution: Execute daily operations as directed, ensuring consistent water treatment throughout the

region. Monitor systems and promptly address minor issues to ensure optimal performance. Including participation

in a 7-day rotating on call roster.

Data Entry & Reporting: Input operational data into management system forms and logsheets and online systems

such as AMIS and SCADA as required. Provide initial reporting on any noticeable trends or issues.

Emergency Assistance: Support the rapid response team during water treatment emergencies, acting swiftly under

the guidance of senior roles to minimize impact to operations.

Routine Maintenance: Carry out scheduled maintenance tasks, inspections and checks on the water treatment

assets to ensure they are in optimal condition, escalating identified issues to Coordinator Water Treatment.

Safety Protocols: Adhere to all Occupational Health and Safety standards. Report any safety concerns to the senior

operator or coordinator and always ensure personal and team safety.

Team Collaboration: Work collaboratively with the team, assisting fellow operators and taking guidance from the

Senior Operator and Water Treatment Coordinator. Participate in training sessions and team meetings.

Stakeholder Communication: Report any customer feedback or concerns to the senior operator or coordinator.

Assist in communicating with the public during routine operations or emergencies as needed.

Resource Management: Efficiently use and maintain equipment, tools, and materials required for water treatment

operations, reporting any damages or needs for replacements.

Other: Perform overtime and undertake additional tasks as needed, consistent with the role's level and the

individual's skills and experience.

Asset & Infrastructure Management: Responsible for the operation and fault response to the authorities

catchments and storages, raw water pumpstations, treatment facilities and clear water storages.

Organisational Relationships

This role reports to the Coordinator Water Treatment and liaises with all internal stakeholders, peers in water corporations

or local government, government agencies and members of the public.

Accountability and Extent of Authority

Accountability: Responsible for the hands-on execution of water treatment tasks, accurate data entry, adherence

to operational procedures, and maintaining safety standards during daily operations.

Authority: Execute tasks as instructed. Utilise AMIS, and SCADA for day-to-day operations and data entry. Alert

senior roles of any system anomalies or potential issues. Contribute to team discussions by providing on-ground

insights and observations. Report any safety concerns immediately and suggest improvements based on

operational experience.

Judgement and Decision Making

Uses judgment to carry out tasks efficiently, ensuring correct data input. Quickly identifies and reports any

treatment issue or data inconsistencies.

Makes day-to-day decisions based on operational procedures, prioritising safety of drinking water and the stability

of the water treatment. Relies on training and experience to navigate routine challenges and consults with superiors

on more complex issues.

Ability to demonstrate good judgement and decision making when identifying hazards and assessing risks with

regard to the exercising of safe work practices.

Specialist skills and knowledge

Knowledge and expertise in water treatment operations. Knowledge of the Drinking Water Quality Management

System requirements and water quality standards.

Demonstrates capability in conducting routine water treatment checks and data entries, ensuring accurate and

efficient reporting. Familiar with the operation and basic troubleshooting of AMIS and SCADA systems.

Experience operating plant and machinery essential for water treatment activities. Adheres to established safety and

operational standards.

Management Skills

Exhibits effective self-management by prioritising and completing tasks on schedule.

Meets performance standards consistently and seeks feedback for improvement.

Manages time efficiently, handling multiple duties, and communicates challenges promptly. Adapts to changes in

workload, ensuring tasks align with team goals

Qualifications and Experience

Certificate III in Water Treatment or equivalent, or substantial experience in the water industry and demonstrated

progress towards achieving Certificate III in Water Treatment or equivalent.
