About Solar Grid-Box
Solar Grid-Box is an Australian engineering company specialising in the design and manufacture of low-voltage switchboards, distribution boards and engineered solutions for commercial, infrastructure and telecommunications projects.
As our manufacturing operations continue to grow, we are strengthening our engineering capability to optimise sheet-metal enclosures, standardise components and manufacturing processes, improve production efficiency, and support the development of reliable and repeatable engineered products.
We are seeking a skilled Engineering Technologist to join our Melbourne-based team and contribute across engineering design, manufacturing, process improvement and project delivery.
About the Role
The Engineering Technologist will apply practical engineering knowledge across product design, CAD modelling, manufacturing support, production optimisation, machinery and tooling, quality assurance and technical project coordination.
Working as part of a multidisciplinary engineering and manufacturing team, the position will play an important role in improving product design and establishing efficient, repeatable manufacturing processes for switchboards, distribution boards and associated engineered components.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce 3D CAD models and detailed manufacturing drawings for sheet-metal enclosures, mounting components, brackets and associated engineered parts.
- Perform engineering analysis, including FEA where appropriate, to evaluate structural strength, stiffness and mechanical performance of components and assemblies.
- Optimise sheet-metal manufacturing processes including material selection, laser cutting, nesting, bending sequences, tolerances and design for manufacture (DFM).
- Standardise components, sub-assemblies, drawings and manufacturing processes to support efficient and repeatable batch production.
- Design and develop jigs, fixtures, tooling and mechanical solutions to improve fabrication, assembly and production processes.
- Support the specification, implementation, operation and maintenance of manufacturing machinery and equipment used in production.
- Prepare and maintain Bills of Materials (BOMs), technical documentation, engineering records, work instructions and quality documentation.
- Coordinate with engineers, production personnel, suppliers and customers to resolve technical issues and support the timely delivery of projects.
- Analyse manufacturing and production processes and implement improvements in quality, efficiency, reliability and resource utilisation.
- Provide technical support for inspection, quality assurance, testing and continuous improvement activities across manufacturing operations.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Engineering Technology or a closely related engineering discipline.
- Minimum 1 - 2 years of relevant professional engineering experience in engineering technology, mechanical design, manufacturing engineering, production engineering or a related technical engineering role.
- Proficiency in 3D CAD and 2D engineering drafting using SolidWorks, AutoCAD or equivalent software.
- Practical knowledge of sheet-metal manufacturing processes including laser cutting, bending/folding, tolerances and design for manufacture.
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings, technical specifications and manufacturing requirements.
- Experience preparing engineering drawings, technical documentation and manufacturing information.
- Strong analytical and practical problem-solving skills with an ability to identify and implement engineering improvements.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to collaborate effectively with engineering, production, supplier and project stakeholders.
Highly Regarded
- Experience with FEA using SolidWorks Simulation, ANSYS or similar engineering analysis software.
- Experience with engineering manufacturing, production optimisation or process improvement.
- Experience with Bills of Materials, engineering procurement and technical documentation.
- Experience designing jigs, fixtures, tooling or manufacturing aids.
- Experience with machinery maintenance, fault diagnosis or manufacturing equipment.
- Experience in quality assurance, engineering document control or production planning.
- Exposure to switchboard, enclosure, electrical-cabinet or similar engineered-product manufacturing.
- Interest in developing further technical knowledge of switchboard manufacturing and applicable Australian Standards.
