Primary objective
Coordinate and further develop the Darwin Harbour Mangrove Monitoring Program (DHMMP), leveraging advanced remote sensing,
spatial analysis, and modelling approaches to support ecosystem monitoring, assessment, and reporting. Provide high-level technical
leadership for the Remote Sensing Unit's satellite and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery programs and field-based monitoring
activities, ensuring the delivery of robust environmental monitoring, analysis and reporting capabilities.
Context statement
The Remote Sensing Unit is responsible for the collection, management, analysis and dissemination of remotely sensed data to support
environmental monitoring, reporting and decision-making across the Northern Territory (NT). Key programs include the DHMMP, the NT
Terrestrial Vegetation Extent Analysis Program, Rum Jungle Remnant Vine Thicket Monitoring Program, and the integrated Rangeland
Monitoring Program. The Unit also maintains computational infrastructure and systems, including the High Performance Computing
facility, that support remote sensing analyses, modelling and scientific monitoring programs.
Key duties and responsibilities
1. Coordinate the ongoing development, scientific direction and delivery of the DHMMP.
2. Support the Manager, Remote Sensing, in guiding the strategic, scientific and technical direction of the Unit.
3. Develop and apply contemporary remote sensing, spatial analysis, and modelling methodologies to assess, classify, monitor, and
predict changes in NT ecosystems, landscape processes, vegetation cover and condition, and land clearing activities.
4. Establish and maintain scientifically rigorous protocols, standards, and methodologies, incorporating appropriate quality assurance
and quality control frameworks to support near real-time monitoring and long-term environmental reporting.
5. Coordinate and lead field-based data collection programs and UAV survey operations.
6. Provide technical oversight of the computational systems, platforms and infrastructure that support remote sensing analysis,
modelling and processing workflows.
7. Deliver high-quality scientific reports, publications, and project outputs within agreed timeframes and budgets.
Selection criteria
Essential
1. A degree in remote sensing, natural resource management, environmental science, spatial science, or a related discipline.
2. Demonstrated experience collecting, analysing and integrating remotely sensed and field-based data to monitor and assess the
condition, extent and dynamics of natural resources, including mangrove ecosystems and other landscape processes.
3. High-level proficiency in remote sensing, spatial analysis, image processing and modelling techniques, including the use of Geographic
Information Systems, Python and other contemporary analytical platforms.
4. Demonstrated experience developing and applying spatial analysis, modelling, machine learning or predictive analytical approaches
to support environmental monitoring, assessment, mapping and reporting.
5. Highly developed analytical skills, with the ability to communicate complex scientific and technical information clearly and logically in
both written and oral formats.
6. Demonstrated ability to engage effectively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including individuals and teams from varied cultural
backgrounds.
7. Current NT Driver Licence (or equivalent) and the ability to operate manual vehicles.
Desirable
1. A postgraduate qualification in remote sensing, environmental science, spatial science, natural resource management, or a related
discipline.
2. Experience with code management and development practices, including DevOps methodologies and platforms such as GitHub.
