The Cardiothoracic Surgery unit at SALHN is where complex, high-acuity care meets a genuinely collaborative surgical team. If you're a Registrar ready to deepen your cardiothoracic experience in a clinically rich environment, this role offers exactly that.
About the role:
Reporting to the Director - Cardiothoracic Surgery, this role is responsible for the provision of high quality care to patients in the wards, and other areas such as theatres, investigational and procedural areas, emergency department and outpatients.
Duties for the role will include:
Overall care and supervision of the delivery of that care to patients under the care of the Department or referred to the Department (in particular timely review and management of patients referred by the Emergency Department).
General administration of the ward procedure relating to medical care (in particular the relevant clinical protocols), ensuring adequate documentation in the case notes, discharge summaries and follow up appointments.
In association with the Unit Registrars, supervise resident staff and students on a day-to-day basis ensuring ready availability to provide advice and guidance. In doing this, the fellow will oversee that registrars, residents and interims are clearly aware of their tasks.
The Service Registrar will be involved in a wide variety of elective and emergency surgical cases. All cases require consultant involvement prior to surgery occurring.
The Cardiothoracic Service Registrar will attend one clinic a week. The clinic involves post-op review patients and new patients. The Service Registrar is expected to briefly present new cases seen and the intended management plan to the relevant surgical consultant.
The Service Registrar will contribute to the on call roster for the Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit and be involved in all surgery including valve repair and replacement, coronary surgery, audit congenital surgery and congenital procedures (WCH), under supervision.
About you:
Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) or equivalent.
Registrable with the Medical Board of Australia as a Medical Practitioner.
Applicant must have at least 6 months’ prior experience in cardiothoracic surgery at PGY3 level and above.
Ability to communicate effectively with a wide range of people including colleagues and other professional staff possessing excellent interpersonal skills.
A commitment to providing a quality service to patients and their families.
Ability to work as a member of a team whilst supervising the more junior medical staff.
Clinical experience and competence in the practice of surgery.
Experience in clinical education and accreditation activities.
Competence in surgical procedures appropriate to the Cardiothoracic Surgical Unit.
