About the Role:
O’Hearn Consulting is seeking a full-time Structural Engineer (Temporary Works) to support structural and mechanical engineering projects involving cranes, lifting equipment and temporary works.
Working under the supervision of senior engineers, the role will involve engineering calculations, design documentation, technical investigations, site inspections and preparation of engineering reports. The position requires sound technical judgement and the ability to work safely in active construction environments.
Salary: AUD $85,000 - $90,000 plus superannuation
Employment Type: Full-time (40 hrs per week)
Tasks and Responsibilities:
· Prepare the design and documentation for mechanical and structural designs. The preparation of designs may include hand calculations, FEA calculations and calculations using other forms of computer programs available to you. The preparation of documentation may include the marking up of plans, instruction and management of other engineering staff and carrying out computer and hand drafting as required.
· Under the supervision of the Senior Engineer carry out the structural and mechanical design and documentation of structural and mechanical elements, which may consist of one or more of the following materials: Steel, Concrete, Timber, Aluminium, Plastics (including FRP), and other materials. The structural design is to be carried out in accordance with engineering principals, the codes of Standards Australia, the BCA, Council requirements, international standards, or manufacturer’s technical specifications or requirements as they may apply.
· Under the management of the Senior Engineer, carry out investigations and prepare engineering reports for structures and machines as required to determine the condition and/or cause of failure and/or recommendations for repair work that may be required.
· Occasional work outside normal 8:30am to 5:30pm Monday to Friday business hours is an expectation for the Temporary Works Engineer when critical stages of projects require inspection or rapid design response.
· Under the management of the Senior Engineer, carry out site inspections and help in the preparation of site reports for the construction of building and temporary works.
· The attendance at design meetings and liaison with others working in the project team forms an integral part of the engineering design and documentation process.
· Develop and maintain a level of health and fitness to be able to safely carry out site inspections which may include the ability to climb and inspect tower crane, concrete boom pump, hoist equipment post installation on sites.
· Perform professional engineering work involving independence in approach, demanding a considerable degree of originality, ingenuity, judgement, and knowledge in all areas of Temporary Works Engineering.
Qualifications and Work Experience Required:
· Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Structural Engineering or a related discipline.
· Master’s degree highly regarded.
· At least 2 years of relevant professional engineering experience, preferably involving structural engineering, temporary works, cranes, lifting systems or heavy construction equipment.
· Knowledge of steel and concrete design, relevant Australian Standards and applicable construction requirements.
· Experience with structural analysis, FEA and engineering design software.
· Knowledge of crane foundations, ties, support structures, temporary works systems and lifting equipment is highly regarded.
· Strong analytical, problem-solving, communication and organisational skills.
· Ability and willingness to safely undertake onsite and elevated equipment inspections and travel to construction sites as required.
· Current Australian driver’s licence is essential..
