Primary objective
To assist teachers in implementing educational programs set by teachers or therapists for students aged 12-18 years who have
severe intellectual and/or multiple and profound disabilities and provide feedback to teachers to allow program modification and
accurate assessments to be made.

Context statement
Henbury School is a purpose-built Special School for students in both the Middle and Senior Years of schooling who have
mild/severe intellectual disabilities or multiple and profound disabilities and or extreme behaviours. There are Outreach classes at
Casuarina Senior College, Darwin High School, Dripstone Middle School and Nightcliff Middle School. Classrooms are complex,
dynamic in nature and multi-level according to how students access the curriculum. Henbury’s motto is ‘Preparing for Future
Lifestyles’ and this overarching belief is reflected heavily through Education Adjustment Plans and Transition Education Adjustment
Plans.

Key duties and responsibilities
1. Implement educational programs set by teachers or therapists either in a school setting or out in community venues.
2. Follow and implement behaviour management programs set by teachers and senior staff.
3. Maintain appropriate records and collect data for teachers to monitor the effectiveness of programs.
4. Administer first aid, provide medication and attend to sick students as necessary, including assisting with personal hygiene

requirements, physical equipment and mobility support.
5. Assist teachers with the preparation and presentation of classroom organisation, activities and teaching aids.
6. Operate machinery and technological devices to support school programs: e.g. PEG feeding, hoists, securing wheelchairs on

buses, Sensory Room technology and augmentative communication tools.
7. As a team member, plan, prepare and be involved in a range of activities such as school camps, excursions or school concerts,

and provide active supervision of students as part of the daily duties roster.

Selection criteria
Essential
1. Proven successful experience working with and ability to relate effectively with adolescents who have mild to severe intellectual

and/or multiple and profound disabilities in a special school setting including demonstrated knowledge of augmentative
communication strategies.

2. Proven ability to interact effectively with people from diverse cultures and to work successfully as part of a team.
3. Proven proficiency in the use of office equipment in preparation of classroom resources.
4. Proven good level of oral, digital and written communication skills.
5. Proven ability to complete tasks and implement class work, work with initiative, under limited supervision and to maintain

complete confidentiality.
6. A current Apply First Aid qualification with CPR and a Working with Children Clearance Notice.

Desirable
1. A current NT Drivers Licence. The ability and willingness to obtain a Light Rigid (LR) Licence.
2. Certificate IV in Education Support or Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.
3. Swim Teacher Rescue Qualification or Bronze Medallion or equivalent.
