Excellent array of Intensive Care Medicine with abundant procedural experience.

HNELHD facilitates a WBA program and was the first LHD to deliver the WBA and now has more than 15 years’ experience. The HNELHD WBA runs over 6 months and is one of the largest in Australia and is based in Newcastle with a regional hub in Tamworth.

Where you'll be working

With 348 treatment spaces, we are the major Rural Referral Hospital to the North West of NSW. We conduct over 9000 surgical procedures per annum over 5 theatre spaces; with the new facility boasting an additional 3 theatre rooms which have been built for future growth. ICU is a 12-bed unit including a 4-bed HDU and admits approximately 950 patients a year of which 30% are ventilated. Both ED and ICU receive patients from rural sites retrieved by the local Westpac Helicopter Retrieval Service which has a base in Tamworth.

The department is led by a group of dynamic FCICMs who promote an active, stimulating, and supportive work environment.

Applicants will be competent in core ICU resuscitative skills such as Intubation, intercostal catheter placement, and central venous cannulation. Along with the consultant they will provide support to ICU SRMOs.

What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the position is to manage patients requiring intensive care, those at risk of clinical deterioration requiring intensive care, plus pre- and post-intensive care evaluation, as directed and overseen by supervising consultants; while developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment.

Critically ill patients include patients with life-threatening single and multiple organ system failure, those at risk of clinical deterioration as well as those requiring resuscitation and/or management in an intensive care unit. Trainees in unaccredited positions in the Intensive Care Department work under supervision, assisting to manage, diagnose and treat the disturbances associated with severe medical, surgical, obstetric and paediatric illness and the conditions that cause them. This may include management of deteriorating and seriously ill patients outside the intensive care unit as well as the intra-hospital transport of critically ill patients.

Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role including evidence of completing two full years of prevocational training
Demonstrated interest in a future career in Intensive Care Medicine or acute care (Emergency Medicine and Anaesthetics) and evidence of continued professional development and self-education in this area of practice.
Demonstrated capacity to work independently within a supervised complex clinical environment utilising excellent clinical skills, judgment and expertise.
Demonstrated high level of organisational, communication and interpersonal skills with a demonstrated ability to convey information to both a clinical and non-clinical audience.
Commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.
