What to Expect
As a key technical member of the cross-functional Applications Engineering team within the Energy Projects group, you will be critical to Tesla's mission of accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy by helping integrate renewable generation and battery storage into utility power systems.
In this SCADA Engineer position, you'll help integrate renewable energy generation and battery energy storage systems (BESS) into utility power systems, focusing on large-scale BESS and hybrid projects (PV or wind farm + BESS) ranging from 10 MWh to 2 GWh, both islanded and grid-connected.
This role is based in Brisbane. It is primarily focused on Australia and New Zealand, with support for other APAC markets also expected.
What You'll Do-
Develop and deploy monitoring and control schemes for complex utility-scale BESS and hybrid (PV or wind farm + BESS) projects using SCADA systems.
-
Manage the design, integration, deployment, and commissioning process for the entire SCADA scope, including on-site and remote operations for renewable energy integration.
-
Deliver SCADA scope primarily in Australia and New Zealand, and support other APAC markets as required.
-
Drive alignment with internal and external Network, Server, and Cybersecurity engineers throughout SCADA deployment to ensure designs meet Tesla’s design specifications.
-
Lead and support SCADA commissioning with TNSPs, AEMO, external contractors and SCADA integrators, and internal engineering teams.
-
Build and continuously improve hardware and software tools, processes, and documentation that increase the efficiency, repeatability, and quality of SCADA deployment.
-
Facilitate the implementation of cybersecurity measures for critical infrastructure telemetry, ensuring compliance with industry standards.
-
Understand, define, and disseminate functional requirements and feedback from the market, coordinating with internal business and engineering team members.
-
Support new Tesla Energy software features by writing specifications and test plans, assisting development and test efforts, managing deployment and documenting new capabilities.
-
Act as the technical point of contact both internally and externally with customers throughout the sales and deployment of Tesla products into new and complex applications.
-
Collaborate with external counterparties to identify the best technical fit for Tesla’s battery energy storage and SCADA offerings.
-
Review Requests for Proposal (RFPs) and estimate engineering hours required to execute on SCADA systems and grid interconnection scope of work.
-
Develop technical or process documentation required to support project evaluation and deployments.
-
Troubleshoot issues and implement fixes on operational sites.
What You'll Bring-
BS/MS in a relevant Engineering discipline with at least 2 years’ work experience in SCADA/control systems or renewable energy; OR equivalent experience and evidence of exceptional ability.
-
2+ years of hands-on experience implementing communication networks for critical infrastructure including multi-layer network architecture. Networking related certifications (CCNA, CCNP, etc) are a plus.
-
Familiarity with industry-standard cybersecurity requirements: DMZ, jump/proxy servers, firewall rules, etc.
-
Demonstrated application of analysis, design and testing to solve complex engineering problems.
-
Strong knowledge of engineering fundamentals – mechanical, electrical, and thermal – is expected.
-
Strong understanding of key considerations for paralleling multiple AC sources: synchronization, voltage vs. current sources, load sharing, Var control, droop control, frequency management, protection coordination, etc.
-
Familiarity with relevant communication protocols and computer interfaces: MODBUS, DNP3, OPC UA, UNIX, JSON, IEC 61850, IEC 60870 protection relay configuration, etc.
-
Familiarity with relevant programming platforms and languages: SEL RTAC, Ignition, CODESYS, Python, AVEVA, etc.
-
Experience with implementing various redundant networking/control system architectures to eliminate single points of failure in critical infrastructure.
-
Familiarity with grid interconnection SCADA telemetry requirements across various markets including AEMO and TNSP (Transgrid, Ausnet, Electranet, Powerlink, etc).
-
Experience with hybrid projects (co-located PV or wind farm + BESS) is a plus.
-
First-principles thinking with a bias for action, able to break problems down from fundamentals and move quickly from analysis to implementation.
-
Besides a rock-solid work ethic and a strong team-oriented personality, members of our team display creativity, passion, and a desire to break new ground in a constantly shifting technology landscape.
