About the Role
The role of the Innovation Lead combines technical innovation and a passion for creative and civic technology. While driving innovation internally, the role works externally to engage technologists, artists, designers and researchers with SLV LAB. This is State Library Victoria's digital prototyping and innovation lab, which fosters experimentation with technology to open access to the Library's collection, data and spaces – and exploration of library futures.
Reporting to the Head of Innovation and Research, and managing a Digital Engagement Producer, this position identifies and builds sector, research, and industry collaboration and partnerships, resulting in working demos, proofs-of-concept and testable prototypes. Overseeing the SLV LAB website and channels, the Innovation Lead also enables the creation of open-source publishing of high-quality code, and oversees development of written and AV documentation of R&D projects and experiments, events, talks and the Lab's podcast series.
About You
We value your willingness to not only be hands-on experimenting with the tools, but also developing internal and external collaborations and partnerships that support the SLV Lab's program of experimentation. You will also bring technical knowledge and oversight, and be committed to ensuring technical projects are accessible, maintainable and evolvable.
In addition, you will come to us with:

Tertiary qualifications in a relevant discipline (e.g. computer science, HCI (Human-computer interaction), interactive design, data science, software engineering) or equivalent industry experience.

Demonstrated experience managing and leading digital innovation projects, initiatives, or delivery of creative digital projects (preferably within the cultural sector or creative industries).

Demonstrated experience in one or more advanced creative technology areas: AI/ML neural networks; real-time graphics processing and rendering; real-time rendering technologies (Three.js, WebGL, TouchDesigner, game engines like Unreal, Unity, Godot); physical computing with sensors and microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi); or experience in creative technology fields such as digital design, media art, or interactive installations.

Track record of exploring emerging technologies, prototyping new approaches, learning independently, and adapting across multiple diverse platforms, languages, and contexts.

A solid track record in successful collaborations through stakeholder management, and development of strategic relationships or partnerships.

Demonstrated experience in building communities of practice or development of initiatives to foster knowledge sharing or exchange in an area of expertise.

Demonstrated experience working in cross-disciplinary environments such as with designers, artists, creative teams, researchers, or non-technical stakeholders to translate creative concepts into technical solutions.
