Job Description
We're seeking a Manager, AI Governance to lead the development and implementation of AFCA's AI governance and assurance framework, helping shape how artificial intelligence is adopted across the organisation in a way that aligns with our values, risk appetite and regulatory obligations.
This is a unique opportunity to sit at the intersection of AI, risk, governance, data, cyber security and emerging technology. You'll play a critical role in enabling the responsible adoption of generative AI, machine learning and agentic AI technologies across AFCA.
Working closely with AI engineers, architects, risk specialists, privacy professionals, cyber security teams and business stakeholders, you'll establish governance-by-design practices that ensure AI solutions are explainable, secure, compliant, auditable and fit for purpose.
This role is ideal for someone who enjoys solving complex technology governance challenges while enabling innovation and practical delivery outcomes.
Typically, in this role you will:

Design, implement and continuously improve AFCA's AI governance control framework.

Establish and operate AI lifecycle assurance processes from ideation through to retirement.

Define governance standards, evidence requirements and assurance artefacts for AI systems.

Conduct technical risk assessments across generative AI, machine learning and agentic AI solutions.

Develop and apply AI evaluation methods including robustness, fairness, groundedness and performance testing.

Partner with technology teams to embed governance-by-design controls into AI platforms and delivery practices.

Maintain AFCA's AI inventory and risk register, ensuring clear ownership, monitoring and governance oversight.

Prepare governance and assurance reporting for executives, audit stakeholders and governance forums.

Support organisation-wide AI governance capability uplift through guidance, education and collaboration.
Qualifications
We're looking for a highly capable AI governance professional who combines strong technical knowledge with a pragmatic and collaborative approach.
You'll bring:

Deep experience in AI governance, responsible AI, AI assurance, model risk management or technical risk disciplines.

Strong understanding of the AI lifecycle, including generative AI, machine learning, MLOps, LLMOps and AI incident management.

Experience designing controls across privacy, explainability, fairness, robustness, safety, auditability and monitoring.

Practical experience evaluating generative AI solutions, including prompt reviews, hallucination assessment, groundedness testing and output quality evaluation.

The ability to translate AI ethics, regulatory obligations and governance requirements into practical controls, standards and delivery guardrails.

Experience working with risk, privacy, cyber security, audit and compliance stakeholders in regulated or high-trust environments.

Knowledge of frameworks such as NIST AI RMF, ISO/IEC 42001 and ISO/IEC 23894.

Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience influencing both technical and non-technical audiences
