The Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Platform Engineer to join a high-performing platform engineering team supporting enterprise-scale cloud platforms within a highly regulated banking environment.
This is a hands-on role focused on designing, building, and evolving internal developer platforms that enable engineering teams to deliver software securely, efficiently, and at scale. You will play a key role in modernising engineering capabilities through automation, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), cloud-native technologies, DevOps practices, and developer productivity tooling.
The ideal candidate will bring strong experience across platform engineering, cloud technologies, automation, and software development, with a passion for improving developer experience and enabling high-performing engineering teams through scalable platform solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build, and maintain internal developer platforms used by multiple engineering teams, with a focus on reliability, security, scalability, and developer experience.
- Own and evolve the central engineering toolchain including GitHub Enterprise, GitHub Cloud, GitHub Actions, GitHub Copilot, and GitHub-hosted runners.
- Develop and maintain Infrastructure as Code (IaC) solutions for Google Cloud Platform using Terraform and related tools.
- Build automation and platform tooling using Python or Java to streamline environment provisioning, configuration management, CI/CD pipelines, and operational processes.
- Design, implement, and standardise CI/CD pipelines using GitHub Actions for build, testing, security scanning, release management, and deployment activities.
- Collaborate with security, risk, architecture, and engineering teams to embed secure-by-default patterns, policy as code, secrets management, and compliance controls into the platform.
- Support onboarding of development teams onto shared platform capabilities and engineering standards.
- Monitor platform performance, reliability, availability, and operational costs, implementing proactive improvements and optimisation initiatives.
- Implement and maintain observability capabilities including logging, monitoring, metrics, tracing, alerting, and operational dashboards.
- Provide technical leadership and subject matter expertise to application teams, supporting troubleshooting, architectural decisions, and adoption of platform capabilities.
- Contribute to platform roadmaps, backlog management, engineering standards, and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Support cloud-native application delivery across containerised and Kubernetes-based environments.
- Maintain platform documentation, engineering standards, operational procedures, and reference architectures.
What You'll Need
- Experience in Platform Engineering, Software Engineering, DevOps Engineering, Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), or a similar role.
- Strong programming skills in Python or Java, including the development of automation tools, platform services, microservices, and engineering utilities.
- Hands-on experience designing, building, and supporting Google Cloud Platform (GCP) environments.
- Strong experience with Infrastructure as Code using Terraform, Ansible, or similar automation frameworks.
- Proven experience developing reusable IaC modules, enforcing engineering standards, and integrating infrastructure provisioning into CI/CD pipelines.
- Hands-on experience with GitHub Enterprise or GitHub Cloud, including GitHub Actions, reusable workflows, repository management, and developer enablement initiatives.
- Experience implementing and supporting enterprise CI/CD platforms and modern software delivery practices.
- Strong understanding of DevOps and SRE principles including automation, continuous delivery, reliability engineering, incident management, observability, and operational excellence.
- Experience working within shared platform engineering or developer productivity teams supporting multiple delivery squads.
- Strong understanding of cloud-native architectures, platform design principles, and engineering best practices.
- Experience with containerisation and orchestration technologies including Docker, Kubernetes, and Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE).
- Knowledge of cloud security, identity and access management, secrets management, encryption, governance, and compliance controls.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, problem-solving, and collaboration skills.
- Experience supporting banking, financial services, or other highly regulated environments is highly desirable.
Desirable Skills
- Experience with GitHub Copilot implementation, governance, and developer productivity initiatives.
- Experience developing platform engineering frameworks and self-service developer capabilities.
- Knowledge of Policy as Code, Open Policy Agent (OPA), Sentinel, or similar governance frameworks.
- Experience with monitoring and observability platforms such as Datadog, Grafana, Prometheus, Cloud Monitoring, or Splunk.
- Experience with cloud cost optimisation, FinOps practices, and workload management strategies.
- Knowledge of security, risk, and compliance requirements within banking or regulated financial services environments.
- Experience supporting enterprise-scale cloud transformation and platform modernisation programs.
- Understanding of architecture governance, technology standards, and engineering operating models.
