About the role
Avant is Australia's leading medical defence organisation, with a proud heritage of protecting Australian medical professionals for over 130 years. As a mutual owned by our members, we exist purely for their benefit, and that means getting insurance risk right matters, for every reserve we hold, every price we set, and every claim we manage.
We're looking for a Manager, Insurance Risk to join our second line risk team, providing independent oversight and credible challenge across our two insurance divisions: Medical Indemnity and Doctors' Health Fund. This is a technically grounded role for someone who understands insurance risk deeply and can hold their own in a room with actuaries, underwriters, and pricing specialists, while translating it all into insight that management and the Board can actually use.
What you'll be doing
- Building strong risk partnering relationships with actuarial, underwriting, pricing, and claims teams across both divisions, while maintaining clear second line independence
- Providing independent oversight and challenge across underwriting, pricing, reserving, claims, and reinsurance risk
- Reviewing and challenging actuarial assessments, including reserve adequacy and claims development
- Monitoring claims experience, loss ratios, and emerging trends across two very different insurance profiles: long tail medical indemnity and private health insurance
- Tracking external drivers such as healthcare inflation, claims trends, and regulatory change, and assessing their impact on the Group's risk profile
- Maintaining and enhancing the Insurance Risk Framework, keeping it aligned with APRA prudential standards (GPS, CPS 220, CPS 230)
- Developing dashboards, KRIs, and clear, decision useful reporting for management and the Board Risk Committee
- Representing Line 2 at divisional risk forums and governance meetings, and supporting strategic initiatives including product changes and reinsurance arrangements
What you'll bring
- 4 to 7 years' experience in insurance risk, actuarial, underwriting, or a related technical role, ideally in general insurance, medical indemnity, or health insurance
- Strong technical knowledge of insurance risk, including underwriting, pricing, reserving, and claims
- An understanding of APRA regulated insurance environments and GPS/PHI regulatory requirements
- The analytical ability to interpret actuarial analyses and challenge reserve adequacy assessments
- Professional scepticism and independent judgement, paired with a genuinely collaborative, business partnering mindset
- The ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to non specialist audiences
- Strong Excel and data analysis skills, with exposure to actuarial or risk systems
- A relevant tertiary qualification (Actuarial Studies, Finance, Commerce, Statistics, or related); RMIA, FIAA, ANZIIF, or CA certification is a plus
- Line 2 risk experience is advantageous, but strong Line 1 insurance technical experience will also be considered
Why this role
You'll work at the intersection of two distinct insurance worlds, long tail medical indemnity and private health insurance, giving you breadth that's hard to find elsewhere. Reporting to the Senior Manager, Insurance Risk, you'll have real autonomy to build relationships, challenge assumptions, and shape how insurance risk is understood right up to Board level, all while being backed by a 130 year old organisation that exists solely to support its members.
