About the role
We are seeking a skilled, reliable, and motivated Welder / Fabricator to join our workshop on a full-time, ongoing basis. Working under the direction of the workshop supervisor, the successful candidate will be responsible for fabricating, welding, and assembling a variety of metal components and finished products to a high standard and in accordance with engineering drawings, measurements, and job specifications.
Key duties and responsibilities
- Interpreting engineering blueprints, technical drawings and written specifications in order to establish the scope, tolerances and requirements of each fabrication task.
- Sourcing, cleaning and conditioning raw metal stock so that it is suitable for subsequent cutting, forming and joining operations.
- Cutting pre-marked metal components and profiles to size through the use of hand tools, oxy-fuel (flame) cutting equipment and mechanical metal-cutting machinery.
- Forming and bending metal sections and piping to the required contours by means of hand and powered tools, together with the controlled application of heat and hammering.
- Positioning and aligning component parts prior to joining, using hand tools and precision measuring instruments to achieve correct fit-up.
- Fusing metal sections together through a range of welding processes, and mechanically securing components by bolting and riveting.
- Inspecting completed welds to verify bead width, depth of penetration and dimensional accuracy against the applicable standards.
- Finishing fabricated products by cleaning, polishing and filing surfaces, including treatment in acid-based (pickling) solutions where required.
- Dressing and smoothing welded joints by filing, chiselling and grinding to achieve the specified surface finish.
Skills and experience required
- AQF Certificate III including at least two years of on-the-job training, or AQF Certificate IV (ANZSCO Skill Level 3).
- At least three years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above.
- Strong, demonstrated experience in MIG/MAG welding, with competency across TIG and manual arc welding techniques.
- The ability to weld to recognised industry standards, including AS/NZS 1554.1, AS/NZS ISO 9606-1 and/or AS 3992, or the demonstrated ability to attain the relevant welder qualification.
- Ability to read and correctly interpret engineering and workshop drawings and to fabricate items accurately from them.
- Good understanding of measuring, marking out and material preparation for fabrication work.
- A sound knowledge of, and commitment to, workshop safety practices and the correct use of personal protective equipment.
- Reliability, attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a workshop team.
Hours and remuneration
This is a full-time position of approximately 38 ordinary hours per week, with overtime available. The remuneration for the role is $79,000 – $90,000 per annum, exclusive of superannuation, together with compulsory superannuation and any penalty rates, overtime and allowances payable under the Manufacturing Award [MA000010] 2020.
