What’s the role?
Westpac One Digital is seeking a highly motivated Site Reliability Engineer to help build, operate and continuously improve the reliability, resilience, observability and performance of critical digital banking platforms. This role combines strong Site Reliability Engineering practices with modern AI-driven engineering to support the evolution of Agentic SRE and intelligent operations. You will work across customer-facing platforms to improve system availability, automate operational processes, enhance observability, support incident management, and leverage AI technologies to reduce operational toil and improve engineering efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Improve service reliability, availability and operational resilience through robust monitoring, resilience testing, disaster recovery planning, and management of SLIs, SLOs and error budgets.
- Design and enhance observability capabilities including monitoring, alerting, dashboards, synthetic monitoring, automated health checks, and visibility across customer journeys and cloud environments.
- Develop automation, self-healing capabilities, operational tooling, Infrastructure as Code and CI/CD practices to reduce manual effort and improve platform reliability.
- Participate in major incident response, service restoration, root cause analysis and continuous improvement initiatives to minimise customer impact and improve recovery times.
- Design and implement AI-driven operational solutions, utilise LLMs for incident triage and remediation, and drive adoption of GitHub Copilot and AI-assisted engineering practices.
What do I need?
- Demonstrated experience in Site Reliability Engineering (SRE), Production Engineering, DevOps or Platform Engineering, with a strong understanding of distributed systems, cloud technologies and modern application architectures.
- Hands-on experience with AWS and/or Azure, Kubernetes, container platforms, CI/CD pipelines and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices.
- Strong expertise in observability and monitoring using tools such as Splunk, Dynatrace, Grafana, Prometheus, OpenTelemetry or similar enterprise monitoring platforms.
- Proficiency in programming and scripting languages including Python, Java, Go, PowerShell or equivalent technologies to support automation and platform engineering initiatives.
- Experience using AI-assisted development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Microsoft Copilot, Claude or ChatGPT, with knowledge of LLMs, AI agents, agentic workflows, prompt engineering and responsible AI practices.
- Strong operational excellence capability across incident management, problem management, change management, root cause analysis, performance engineering, capacity planning, disaster recovery testing and operational readiness.
- Banking or financial services experience is highly regarded, particularly supporting mission-critical digital banking or payment platforms, with knowledge of APRA CPS 230 Operational Resilience requirements and experience developing AI agents, AIOps solutions or autonomous operational capabilities.
