The Northern Surgical Skills Training Network (NSSTN) offers junior doctors a unique opportunity to gain diverse surgical experience, develop procedural skills, and build a strong foundation for future Surgical Education and Training (SET) applications. As one of six (6) Surgical Skills Training Networks across NSW, NSSTN is dedicated to supporting surgically inclined doctors through structured clinical training, education, mentoring, and career development.

What you'll be doing

The primary purpose of the role is to provide effective clinical management of surgical patients, under appropriate supervision, whilst developing expertise in medical practice, in a complex clinical environment. The Surgical (Surgical Skills) Senior Resident Medical Officer (SRMO) is the key person who works closely with all members of a multi-disciplinary team and deals with matters of an urgent or sensitive nature, whilst exercising discretion, sensitivity and maintaining confidentiality. Decision making and supervision will be at the appropriate level according to the SRMO skills, knowledge and experience. They will be expected to adopt a progressively more independent approach to patient management according to their experience, under the guidance of and at the discretion of the appropriate Attending Medical Officer (AMO). The position will consist of 4 rotations. Employment for this position is within the Northern Surgical Skills Network rather than hospital based. As a part of your employment contract you may be expected to rotate within the following hospitals: Gosford Hospital, Royal North Shore Hospital, Ryde Hospital, Port Macquarie Base Hospital and Northern Beaches Hospital. There will also be a network relief term in which cover is provided for a roster which combines the Northern Surgical Skills Network and the Northern SET Network.

Qualifications and experience commensurate with the Essential Requirements for the role

Demonstrated ability to work independently in a supervised environment.

Adept ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team with an understanding of the roles of the doctor and other members of the healthcare team.

Adept written and verbal communication skills and ability to communicate effectively and respectfully with patients, family members and others members of the health care team.

Adept good organisational and time management skills and ability to manage competing priorities in a complex environment.

Demonstrated commitment to quality improvement, patient safety and risk management.

Evidence of continuing professional development and commitment to self-education.

Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination against Specific Diseases

To be employed by NSW Health, applicants must provide evidence of vaccination and comply with the NSW Health Occupational Assessment, Screening and Vaccination Against Specified Infectious Diseases Policy Directive (PD2024_015). Compliance with this policy, including any amendments made from time to time, is a mandatory condition of employment.

Applicants will be required to provide acceptable evidence of their vaccination status, immunity, and any other occupational health requirements relevant to the position. Evidence must be submitted and assessed in accordance with NSW Health requirements prior to commencement.

Working with Children Check

This position requires a Working With Children Check (WWCC) clearance issued by Service NSW. A current and valid WWCC is a mandatory requirement for appointment to this role.
